Oh my goodness! I am with you when it comes to hawks! I also used to love them, now, when I see one, even if I am miles away from home, I'm talking to it through my car window..you stay right down here, don't even think about going up to my house! I've had them sweep right down in front of me..Cooper hawks. Brazen little stinks!

Edit .. almost forgot to say so sorry..how rude of me! I got so riled up just thinking about it!

I cheer when I see them in the ditch- Along with raccoons and etc...

So sorry to both of you who lost precious chickens today! I've always loved hawks but I'm getting ready to put up fence in my backyard for semi-free ranging. I'll be scared to leave them alone for a minute. Hope it leaves your girls (or guys) alone!

That would be a good thing to see. Haven't yet though. And, we do have racoons in the state, but knock on wood, none yet here in the neighborhood. Cats..now cats are a different story. Ugh!

Well I melted my dehydrator bottom with the element. Word of caution: Never turn them upside down to use as a brooder heater. On the upside there were no chicks this was just a test to see if it would work. This is what happened because the heating element was not rigged to hang upside down and have the heat build up on the plastic bottom.

Melted through the bottom.

Here in the last photo I have removed the element which still works and I will mount it on a metal pie pan or cake pan.

HOW MANY WATTS IS THAT ELEMENT?/

Sneak preview!

In honor of the strange weather most of you have been having this winter, we are opening up a contest for "Poultry in the Snow". We are still working out the details, but if you have snow, get some great pictures! Any fowl welcome!
Snow?? How about either dirt or mud. Thank God for the rain when we get it, but I've fallen to many times in the mud and my birds are to dumb to get out of it. The first time I fell this year, they decided it was a good time to climb on me. Glad I didn't pass out or they probably would have feed on the fat lady.

How many are looking for these?

It is the year of the light sussex?
I'm going to have to ask about some of these as well. But I think I may know who to ask. I lost my SQ pair last year and have one hen left out of them. Also have to find some nice Wellies.....If my birds were all laying I could probab;y trade. Gotta take a stock put out tomorrow and have THE TALK with them.

Are the eggs in your avi laid that color or dyed?
They are laid that way.

Here's what my colection usually looks like

The one at the bottom is lavender, but not showing well on there for some reason
Another one at 9:00

I'm so excited!!! This will be my first ever hatch.
Welcome to the insanity. Might be your first, but trust me, it won't be your last

Well, my luck ran out today. I walked out on my back porch to the screams of my chickens. The sound was coming from everywhere, but not a bird in sight. I took off running and a huge hawk flew up off of the ground right in front of me. He had already gotten one of my little Cuckoo D'Anver roo's.

Then the fun started because I had to round up 30 chickens and get them all locked up in their coops. After about 45 minutes of slipping and sliding in slushy, icy, chicken poop filled mud...we finally got them all inside.

I learned that my kids are only help for the first 15 minutes of any job, and then promptly turn into whiney spoiled brats

. All of my runs are in ruins, and the gates are frozen deep into the ground. It's supposed to be in the 50's tomorrow finally, and my poor babies will be locked up because Ray has to work. What a day.... Have I mentioned yet that I hate hawks??? Oh, I used to be a hawk lover too....pre chicken farmer.

END OF RANT!

I'd rant too! Sorry about your girl and your chicken roundup.

I had one grab my Tolbunt hen today. So sad!
So sorry!

I've lost birds to hawks and owls. They don't even always take them, just break necks. bastages

OZ! The beach? Really? I don't live near one anymore. Central Valley sucks for anything unusual.
