I got 10 more broilers & 5 buckeyes today. The pic is to show the growth between 2 days & 16 days on the broilers. These little beasts get big FAST!

I only sell my eggs for $1.50!  To a neighbor friend.  Wow, you guys are getting that much?  4 dollars?

Mike, those goats are adorable!  What a neat thing to wake up to.   Wish I had the land, I would have goats for sure.   And, more chickens. :D

I was charging $4, but someone in town is charging $2, so I brought mine down to $3. For hatching eggs, I've gotten as high as $18 for a dozen...$25 if I had to ship.

Here it depends on where you are. In Davis there is not trouble selling them. In the Valley north of Woodland you can't give them away.

Costco is selling their brown eggs for more than $4.00/dozen. Eggs are going to get very pricey in California--The state is requiring all eggs sold to be "humanely Raise" in cages large enough to let the hens turn around. No cheap battery eggs shipped from Missouri and etc.

If you live here, you will be able to raise the prices.

Wow Store bought eggs at over $4 a dozen, that's crazy.

I didn't know that about CA requiring them to be cage free. I'm licensed by CA state to sell my eggs & there was nothing about that. It won't affect me as I'm cage free, but just surprised I didn't know.

I KNOW! I think we loose a bit money once and a while having so many roos and only two layers, but I do think the freshness is a high priority for our family. one of the youngns KNOW and can IDENTIFY a store bought scrambled egg! we don't even have to tell him! he wont touch it or eat it! I guess the smell and coloring is weird....I only eat out eggs and other fresh eggs.

Looks like I haven't been charging enough for my eggs either. I have been selling them 2 doz for $5 (so $2.50 a doz) to a high school friend and her extended family. I have been thinking about raising the price to $3 or $3.50 a dozen. We've got a fridge going into the shed to start a pseudo CSA on the honor system this summer with eggs and fresh veggies.

ThaiDye, it's not that California is requiring ALL sold eggs to be from "cage free" chickens, it's that caged PRODUCTION chickens must be housed in cages larger than previously allowed. Missouri and some other states still practice the really inhumane methods of four or more hens to a small cage; California's fairly new law is interfering with those other states' bulk egg sales to grocery chains and other egg product businesses doing business in California.

Missouri major egg sellers have spearheaded the legal battle against California.

Not that any of us BYCers have to worry about it.... The only reason any of us may have stuffed a bunch of chickens into cages is for transport purposes, and I bet none of us have crammed four or more birds into cages as small as some factory farms routinely house them all the time. :(

I am estatic right now! My breeder just gave me a free chick from one of his hatches tomorrow! I may get 3 if I can!

Here are the breeds he is hatching:
Dominique
Blue wyandottes
Golden red sexlink
Barred plymouth rock
Buckeye pullets
Silver laced wyandottes

Which of these would have the best egg production?

The two in bold are the best; the sex links maybe a slight bit more prolific than the Barred Rocks.

But if it were MY choice, I'd go for the Buckeyes, followed by BRs, simply because *I* want some real Buckeyes in my flock. :) For "pretty" and personable as well as production, you can't go wrong with BRs.
