I see veining in one of my ameraucana eggs!!!!!! I peeked while I added water lol. I used my cell phone flash light and just put it against the egg. Eeeeeeeek!!!!!!
Oh, I have a feeling you won't be the only one sneaking peeks early.... It about kills me to wait..

our first ever shipment of chicks went out on the express truck this afternoon from our local, I am a fretting mother hen!

I was able to get photos today of the African grey eggs and the cockatoo eggs:) Didn't get my face ripped off either.

African grey eggs. They ended up laying 4, but one is in the incubator with repaired cracks...

Goffins Cockatoos. These clowns don't trust me with their eggs AT ALL !

Our power went out at 4 this morning! The incubators got down to about 82 F before we got the generator going. I hope they'll be okay. They had plenty of issues to deal with in the first place....shipped eggs, cracked eggs, damaged air cells....
I put ziplock bags of hot water all around them with heavy towels on top. Probably didn't bring the temp up but may have kept them from losing more heat.
You are living my old dream. In my petstore days I had A Red Lored Amazon, Orange Winged Amazon, Cherry Head Conure, Green Cheeked Conure & Mitred Conure. I always wanted to get into breeding, but divorce changed my plans for me.. Sigh. Can't wait to see your babies hatch!

Jbher: When did you set? I haven't peeked yet, but did manage to figure out that my very VERY poor hatch rates are most likely due to faulty thermometers (plural), now that I've dropped the temperature, I'm hoping for improved hatches, although I did manage to have my Easter HAL eggs at too high a temp for the first 3 days.

Sally, that video of the hatchery chicks being hatched was amazing! vaccinating for Bronchitis? Who knew...although I can't help but be sad for the male chicks, call me sentimental.

Oh no!!! How high did you realize your temps got? :-(

I set my eggs at about 2pm on Saturday! So they are not quite 4 days old yet. Yesterday I peeked in one ameraucana egg when I added water so they were 3 days by that point and I saw veining. This is my first time ever incubating - I can see how this can become ADDICTING!!!

SOOOO COOL!!!! NOT cool about the power going out!!! Between you and @Sally Sunshine losing power a couple days ago I decided to order the DC 12V battery adapter that can connect to my incubator. It should come in a few days. I am hoping to never have to use it but for $15 I'd rather have it here if I do need it!! I just wish I would've ordered it sooner... Thursday we are expected to have 10-15" of snow. UGH!!! Worst winter ever!

Seeing the exotic birds and their eggs is so neat! I'm glad you could share.

I am in the process of hatching eggs for a 4H group. I have 2 chicks out, and four more to go. Because the group wanted to watch the hatch at their convenience (and because I usually do it!), I have a webcam going on it.

I can't even keep up with this thread. I set broodies and this...............

I did not even count.

BUT we need the totals! Looks like these were counted up for you, but how many did you set under broodies?

So cool! I've always wanted a cockatoo, but the fact that they live longer than I do has deterred me from getting one.

Its been a few days since I've been on BYC because I've been really sick. Hows everything going?
Hope you feel better soon!

Okay, that day is officially over, I'm ready for a better one!
Decided to go give Penelope the rest of the fertile (I hope) turkey eggs... I'd rather she raise them than me, especially since I'm not seeing veining in the 'bator ones. Got out there and found a huge opossum in the hay barn with her. Ran back to the house to get husband/shotgun. Ran back out (it's a quarter mile) and watched the side door while I waited for the cavalry; when we went through the side door it was exiting the end door. Meaning at least he didn't have to make really loud noises inside a huge empty steel building that my turkey is setting in... did have to go for another short run - but Princess Penelope is safe(er?)(slightly, maybe? I remember sleeping. Sleeping was good. Don't think I'll be doing much in April.).

Apparently I crushed one of the eggs during one of the runs - the shell is crackles but the membrane is not broken. I brought it back & coated the cracks with 'out the door' and will put it in the incubator; probably won't make it but I'm sure it couldn't hold up in the nest. I hope I didn't make scrambled eggs out of all of them....

Oh! First Buff of tomorrows hatch is now out.
Close call! Bad opossum!

Quote: Incubating darker eggs has it's challenges in candling. It's harder to see inside them. Now white eggs, those are fun to candle because you can see everything!

As for the light, I've never heard that it damages the eye, but I only candle twice - at about 10 days and at 18.

So dear CayuseRanch said to SET ALL THE EGGS!

So I stuck as many into this little contraption as possible and then snapped a photo. (Thus the temp is down)

What do you think the chances are that any of them will actually hatch? I have to say, turning them is fun.... like juggling eggs actually! LOL

Haha! Be careful opening that one!

I put my order in for some snowflake quail hatching eggs from Gunrunner! Yes ! I will be getting eggs in the next couple of months from them.
smile.png
I've never heard of snowflake quail, they sound interesting!

Candled last night - day 5 for me. Only saw veining in 11 out of 30. A few that I'm pretty sure are clears, and many probably clear but not sure. This depresses me.

It's still pretty early, don't stress too much.

I gave my broodies their eggs on Sat as planned then I went OOS...I live in California and am in NJ right now...anyway DH is in charge of the coops and he ended up with hens where they don't go. Somone got on top of one of my broodies to lay her egg and in doing so broke one of the eggs I had set. I don't know how much goo got all over the place..(these are bantam eggs so hopefully there wasn't much) and I won't till I get home on Sunday
barnie.gif
I guess it is silly for me to worry about it from here but what would you do once you got home to assess the situation? At that point would you just candle more frequently?. I have no sense of smell so can't sniff test. Should I toss any eggs that were gunked? DH is saving eggs for me and not refrigerating in case I have to replace the whole hatch but it won't be with the bantam eggs b/c those didn't come from my birds.
When you get back, wipe the eggs with a damp (warm) washcloth. Make sure you clean out any gunk in the shavings (or whatever you use for bedding in the nest) as it will attract flies.

I'd like to join up. I have 3 BR turkey eggs hatching Easter Sunday. Candled them yesterday and everything is looking great.
Welcome!

Count me in. Where do I post my photo?
Post it here please. When did you set your eggs?
