Bad day, very bad day. We have had problems around our farm with packs of dogs. DH is up at least once or twice a night chasing them off. Today he had let the hens out to free range with our very good rooster Colonel. He went inside and heard commotion and found 5 dogs after the chickens. They killed 3 hens and our rooster flew off with a young roo. DH has been looking for him all day He hears him crowing but cannot locate him in the woods. He called animal control and they said if it happens again they will put live traps out. Apparently several people have reported problems in the area. One of the dogs try to go after DH. I am upset about loosing the chickens, but I am also sad for the dogs. People just letting lose and not taking care of them. I really loved those roos. Colonel - our Barred Rock was big and yet so approachable. I am so afraid we are not going to find him.

Man that really sucks that's why there's a law here if the dog is on your property and after your live stock you have full license to shoot the **** thing

I just now read your post. Our prayers are with you for your comfort, period. Hope all works out, but hope you can take some comfort in peace and warmest best thoughts on any result. It is always difficult to loose what you care for, always wish and pray for the best...be willing to deal with the worst. If you own chickens, you will feel pain at some point. Wishing you the best, our prayers for your comfort.

Im so upset candled remaining 9 eggs five blood rings, and 1 clear.. Left the clear one the other three have good size aircells. So i left them... Out of all of them the clear...i thinkhad the biggest air cell. Wish me luck but i dont think you guys should count me for the easter hatch.
I hope the rest of the eggs do well for you. Were the eggs shipped?

Kitten Update:
here they are at 5 days old...too precious for words. Soft, velvety tummies, sweet little squeaky mews...3 boys and 2 girls. lower left Asher (male), 2 orange and white boys: Maximus and Flynn, all gray female Anna, and gray and white female on right Elsa.
Precious kittens! I love the lower left male and the blue female!

Yup, contagious like the flu. Good luck! So far, just belly pluckers here.

You make me laugh! I was wondering about the bucket of squirrels, but forgot to ask by the time I was done multi quoting!

Quote: It's hard to be sure in pictures, but it looks clear. If you are not sure, leave it until Day 18.

That's exciting!

It was raining like crazy here today - and cold! We just got our bees yesterday and they had to spend the whole day inside the hive. I'm hoping they spent the day making comb.
Good luck with your bees!

In other news, my broody is still broody. She sat on the nest all day again, and stayed there tonight when it was bed time. My husband goes to work very early, and he's going to shine a light in there in the morning and see if she's still on the nest. One of our other hens did lay an egg in the nest box (it's a community box), and my broody took it. Lol. But none of the others have laid since she went broody. So tomorrow I will move her so my other girls will start up again. Hopefully.

Just want to say that next years hatch along will be much bigger for me. I will have 4-5 established flocks. Building their split coop now. It will be a 8'x40' coop split in 3 (13') sections with 13'x45' runs on each. Construction starts tomorrow.

Edited for grammatical error
*jealous* Sounds like it will be a great setup! Be sure to take pictures!

Awwwww, I suck.

I was having a bad day and went in tonight to candle one egg, just to see the little thing moving and cheer me up. I dropped it!

It was on a carpeted floor and didn't crack, but clear veins went to vague dark smear and a nice clear air cell is indistinguishable. .

I put it back in the 'bator, just in case, but

I feel so bad, now. Why did I mess with it? I just wanted to see something happy.
Geez, I'm sorry. You need to go to bed and wake up tomorrow. What a rotten day for you.

Ok the wintergreen in to keep away hive beetles that carry the mites that kill the bees. The others... She sent me this link:

I like Young Living because they are the only company that grows, harvests and distills their own plants. From seed to seal they onow what is in those oils.

If you're interested pm me! They work good on chickens too!!
Bookmarked it, thanks!

Okay so my one batch of eggs wasn't supposed to hatch until Friday, but low and behold look what I found. Poor guy was stuck in the turners because the eggs were not supposed to even go into lockdown until tomorrow. Another of the ducks looks to be hatching so I went and locked down the bator tonight. I've heard of birds hatching early, but this is kind of ridiculous. It's just the ducks though. The turkeys and chicken don't appear to be pipping yet.

Awwww, look at that cutie! Congrats!

I am so happy, our ever attempt, broody hatched rumpless. Perfect, strong and beautiful!
And another cutie! Congrats!

Oh no! I'm sorry, and I hope you find your rooster. In VA, we are allowed to shoot dogs that threaten our livestock. I guess CA doesn't have that law?

California does have that law. There are very good livestock protection rules. Much of the state is Open Range for cattle too.

California is a Huge Ag State.

Yup, so many folks think of San Francisco or Los Angeles when they think about California - they are amazed when they find out HUMONGOUS sections of the state are forested, or open farmland. There's more at stake than lawns during our drought years. California provides an incredible percentage of all kinds of the narion's produce.

I hate having to shoot dogs, but I will do so if necessary. (So far, the only ones which have made it ONTO my property have been little yappers from next door, which the geese have dissuaded from doing any damage. The same neighbor, on my behalf, has peppered bigger, stray dogs with buckshot when they showed up two days in a row, trying to get into my yard. He has chickens, too.)

Candled all 35 tonight. In the little brinsea 8 out of 8 looked good. In the new styro 22 looked good, 4 were clear and one looked like a possible blood ring. Whole lot of wiggling going on in those eggs, too.

Candled tonight tossed 3 that were growing something bad ,repaired shipped eggs ...letting a few questionables go a few more days ...on. a good note I was pleasantly surp.ised when I got 15 eggs in the mail from a BYC member was only expecting maybe 8. Had to put 4 in the hatcher.

Now that is just precious. Glad it is ok after hatching in the turner! Baby ducks...
