I am too... relieved really. Ill take a picture of her shell once i get her out of the incubator.... I am baffled by the exploding shell. Has anyone ever had that happen or something similar? her egg was by my thermometer so im thinking maybe she got banged up against that.... i dont know. But at least she is out and doing well
Ohhhh! So, does this mean that the eggs that took so long to get here could be longer hatching..or not be able to? They are developing! I'm so excited for this. The egg colors are beautiful. I'm seeing veining and beanie babies on day three here.
It will take longer for them to hatch but it depends on a lot of factors as to how healthy the chicks will be. Be very patient with them at hatch.
Eggs are a closed system so the very healthiest eggs from a healthy flock with good genetics will hatch well.
Expect that hatch rates will be lower and some might get right up to hatching and not make in some cases. It will be worth it if you get some of those pretty egg layers!
If I remember correctly, They came from a very good Flock so they have an edge up on hatching even with the lost package and extra shipping time.
That's really terrible. And funny. Hens laying in a bucket of dead squirrels is just the kind of off the wall thing that would happen to me... if I had a bucket of dead squirrels. And we have ENOUGH squirrels here, I really wouldn't mind if they were in a bucket instead of in my attic/walls...
I hear you. I had a chipmunk hibernating in my attic much of the winter. Right above the master bedroom. I've only bantam chickens & quail atm, we've plenty of field mice here as well but I doubt the birds would even hunt them. *sigh*
I was pretty happy this morning i was eating breakfast then i was going to check my birds, then my great uncle called( he lives closer to my birds he's right next door to my grandfather who's farm i raise my birds on). He said he saw a fox running around with something in it's mouth. My stomach dropped i ran up there with my gun and it was the biggest fox i have ever seen. He killed my tom turkey out of all things i would of rather him kill a chicken instead. Im mad and going to kill it later.
Here are the results of yesterday's hatch using the Brinsea mini advance. Four hatched great, two did not hatch, and one hatched late and weak (is still in the incubator) to make five total.
The freshest of the eggs all hatched the best... or so it seemed. Two did not hatch.
too many to quote, but the bucket of dead squirrels started out because I had one squirrel who was just destroying EVERYTHING! he was like Midas but in stead of turning everything he touched into gold he just broke everything he touched, he destroyed my bird feeder, then as if an entire bird feeder of feed wasnt enough, he eviscerated the bag of birdseed- from the bottom... even though the top was open. then he utterly destroyed a bag of trash from my car. yes that might have been tempting since i do think there was some food in there, but i literally, cleaned my car, dropped the bag on the porch, backed my car back into the garage and went to get the bag of trash and he had already spread it all over the porch and front yard. and this was all in the same day. so- he HAD to go. I got him with my pellet gun and then thought it was a waste to just have one squirrel so I got a few more to skin out and get the meat from to make a pie. unfortunately after I got a few more, my daughter got a super high fever and i spent all day worrying and forgot about the squirrels.
hence, the bucket of dead squirrels aka: perfect spot to lay eggs apparently. I don't think anyone needs to see a photo of a squirrel nestbox, but here is some squirrel damage:
Ok so here is a question: I just got a couple of Rcom incubators, and a friend said "they are nice, but people say they hatch more males" is this possible? i kind of dismissed it when she said it, but I just hatched norwegian jaerhons and I clearly have 1 female and 7 males. coincidence ? I always thought chickens weren't affected by the temperature, or else hatcheries would just use the "more females temperature" I am sure someone has answered this already on some other thread but thought i would get a quick answer here, plus they are cute and everyone loves pictures of chicks
My easter hatch was a total failure. I've already ended mine... 0 have/will hatch. All three goose eggs were clear, and all but two rouen eggs were clear. The last two quit, visible at the second candling.
