Isn't it just fantastic how transparent they are? For example: one of mine clearly has yellow wings with black tips. Those feathers are just swaying in the fluid. The other night I saw a complete flipper, and a beak. I pray to God that he will let me hatch out these Calls because I have gotten quite attached!
These were my Khaki Campbell eggs. I didn't candle all of my Calls and Black East Indies yet but the 2 I checked were looking good. Hope I can candle them all tonight!
I have a status update on our hatch. Turtlefat and I did our day 10 candling, as we had a lot of potentially clear eggs that we were giving a little longer. Well, it looks like all of Turtlefat's eggs were duds. She has a bantam rooster, and I don't think he's getting the job done on her standard sized hens. Anyway, of 41 eggs in the incubator, yesterday we tossed all but 14. The 14 are all from the 21 eggs I set, from my Welsummer rooster.

So yeah, down to 14. On the bright side, taking 27 eggs out of the bator made much more room for sponges and whatnot, and keeping that humidity steady has become much easier!

Now I'm just hoping to get these 14 out of their shells, and also hoping that half will be hens!!

BYC 2014 Easter Hatch-a-long

Creative Brooder Contest!

I've always have used card board boxes to brood my chicks, as the chicks grew I would tape a couple of boxes together.

When I began to hatch more and more, it became more difficult to keep enough boxes on hand. I would have to go to the store, the sales person would ask me if they could help me. I'd say yes, I need something that comes in a box that will hold about 2 dozen chicks.

Some boxes collected for 2014 hatching.

Please help me and show us your brooders!

Brooder Contest Rules: All BYC in Continental US, since it has a prize of hatching eggs. Creative brooder set ups.

Contest dates: Entries accepted March 4, 2014 - April 9,2014 12 midnight PT

Voting will open : TBD , Voting information will be announced in this thread, as well as, the main 2014 Easter Hatch-a-long thread.

Judging: BYC member voting poll for the Most Creative Brooder. We recommend those voting to consider: Creativity, reusable, ease of cleaning, ease of storage, (If more than 30 entries a judging panel may reduce number down to their top 30)

Prize : 10+ Chocolate Mottled Bantam Cochin hatching eggs from Chookschick! (Thanks Chookschick!)

Okay candled tonight...

9 clear out of the 38.

Inquiring minds...

This was not originally in the "setting" candling. Does anyone know what this is? Two black dots but doesn't look like any other development.

is it on the shell or inside? could be meat spot or blood spot, I see no veining, it doesnt stink right?

The spots were not there when I received them or when I candled before putting in the incubator. The spots are on the inside. They are solid black and perfectly round. Dark shell so I can't see any veining but don't think so. Nope, does not stink.

I thought meat spots too, but wasn't sure about them only showing up after being in the incubator. Worried that it's a bacteria.

Should I go ahead and pull it, or give it a couple more days?

THE MAGIC HAS BEGUN!

I just set 3 polish eggs under marshie! (at 6:30 PM)
she is now the happiest camper alive.
smile.png

I couldn't resist....LOL. I called my breeder and asked for ameraucana, polish or australorps, but he only had 3 polish...all others were bought that day. SO I paid $4.50 for 3 eggs.....it will be well worth it, and hopefully I will end up with cool crossed colors, no frizzles, and NO MIXED BREEDS. (its happened twice...trust me. LOL)

NOW 21 DAYS OF WAITING! due to hatch on the 29th.

he has silver laced, gold laced, top hat, and buff.....im pretty sure all in the same pen.......I HOPE I have all pure polish....maybe crossed coloring too!
Yay, congrats on getting some eggs under her!

Just a little update on how my eggs are progressing.
Nice!

Ok so I'll be setting my incubator this Friday and I might join in the other Hal, but I wanted ya'll to see the incubator my school has, it's almost as old as I am! That, my friends is a 1988 Lyon TX6 and it works!!! I set it up today to see what the temps were doing and if it was still calibrated. Yep, a perfect 100 in that baby. Loud as heck though! The kids still don't know what we are doing, so they all think it's a popcorn machine.
smile.png
It's very interesting looking! Popcorn machine!
lau.gif

So, as you all have seen... I am on a building spree. I decided today that I was going to repurpose this old dresser...

Anyone wanna guess what it's gonna be?
A very cool looking brooder?

Popping in to say hello! Been busy with the Funny Random Posting and Mini contests all day. I pray you all enjoy the night! We have chicks hatching, 2 Blue Sal Favs are already out.

My stupid springers dug under the white faced spanish gate, killed a hen and scattered everyone else all over the woods!!! Searching outside in the pricker bushes for them in the dark and here the ROO is already in the coop and four hens are on the roof! the rest are MIA probably on the house roof or the dogs ate them completely!!! ughhhhhh
he.gif
Now Its best for me to assume they will dig at all fencing and attempt to get under via digging!!!! I have a feeling they will end up back to a small area of my back yard instead of the back acre. more fencing! We are soon going to look like a prison when someone comes!

Hoping I have time to read through the thread before bed!
I'm so sorry Sally. I hope you get the woofers under control.

So trying this again, I need to share the hell that is this little singing incubator! LOL
That is too funny. My kids would be making it "sing" constantly. Happy Birthday I can sorta understand, but Clementine?

Quote: I'm so sorry.

Anyone know if it would really mess a hen up to give her chicks just a few days after she started going broody?
hu.gif
I was really hoping that some of our broody veterans would get their act together in time to adopt some of these HAL chicks, but so far no one is volunteering.
sad.png
A couple of them (BO's) are clucking a little when they are walking around, and one BA sat on a bunch of eggs in the coop almost the whole afternoon yesterday, but she was out with everyone else today. I was hoping they would start at least a week before the chicks were due to hatch, and I would even give them some of the fertile eggs from the incubator to finish hatching. It is just so much easier to have a hen raise the chicks, especially if you are planning on integrating them into your flock later anyway.

Oh well, I will keep hoping. Only 11 more days to go til hatch day!
love.gif
It depends on if she's seriously broody or just thinking about it. But chickens can't count, so once they start sitting, they don't realize how long they have been there. I've given eggs for a broody to hatch a week after she went broody and everything was fine.

ok question I have 3 eggs on day 12 and 2 are moving and one is a little questionable it dosent look like it but it has a detatched air cell and it looks like this (day 12)
do you think its alive or no I can see an eye and sorta a body but it is a little hard to see and a lot of veins any ideas?
If you are unsure, leave it in.

The emu egg is really wiggling of late! I have a strong feeling that this big guy is going to hatch early. Mark My Words. lol. This is prob a dumb Q. but should I also put the THIRD emu egg hatching on live stream when the day comes?
wee.gif
Of course you should!

Hey guys! Sorry I've been a slack hatch a long participant. Between losing all but 3 of the dorking from my McMurray order, 1 out of 4 geese actually hatching, NONE of my dorking eggs developing and something getting into my barn and killing 22 4-6wk old chicks, I have been a basket case.
Ugh. On a brighter note, I have 2 CPG eggs developing, all 18 BBS English Orps developing and 7 out of 12 Narri eggs still going strong! Over half the Silkie eggs I set are duds and I need new batteries before I'll be able to see into my AM and Marans eggs.
Thanks a bunch to @ronott1 for the digest or I'd be lost!
I'm sorry for your predator issues.

These are all pictures of serama eggs I had shipped by Sally, I am so excited to have these hatch!! 13 of the original 16 (two are surprise eggs) still going strong not bad considering the journey they took.

This egg is TINY!!

Wish this were clearer this guy was swimming like crazy!!

Oh lord I want them to hatch now!!
Awesome!

Okay candled tonight...

9 clear out of the 38.

Inquiring minds...

This was not originally in the "setting" candling. Does anyone know what this is? Two black dots but doesn't look like any other development.

Meat spots would be my guess.

You can't see them, but there are baby bunnies in that pile of fur! My one rabbit finally had her babies today! I can't wait until they get some fur so I can take them out and document their cuteness!
Oh wow, I was scared for a minute. Baby bunnies! Spring has certainly arrived!

Good morning! I candled my duck eggs last night and 9 of the 11 have very squirmy babies!
Yay!

so.......through the daily digest I heard we were talking about bees yesterday!

(to be honest I didn't look back in the thread to where we were discussing but..)
my grandfather is a bee keeper.

of all the times I have been over to help him, I have only gotten 1 good pic.
hide.gif

(I didn't watermark my picture this time.....but I trust you guys!

)

BEES ARE GREAT! LIKE CHICKENS! hahaha
Fantastic picture! Bees are super hard to take pictures of!

Very dissapointing news guys...
I had my first 3 sets of eggs set for this hatch along. Last night When I couldn't figure out why my eggs weren't hatching, I did more research and realized that 13 out of 20 were non viable, duds if you will.
so sad, but on a good note I actually saw the spider veins in the last 7 I have. All Pekin ducklings. Last hatch due to hatch May 1st. Wish me luck
Good luck with those ducklings!

There are four FAVs out and pips in others, and one CCL has a pip.

QUESTION/NOTES:
... I never hatched this breed, its shipped Blue Salmon Favs, but they hatch weird!
Instead of small external pips they have these large holes they make pretty quickly thereafter? and then sit there.
Some chicks do this, but it seems all of these are doing it! LOL
Just something I noticed that is different, anyone else ever notice this with specific breeds?
II will be overrun with Favs today by the look of it.
Also anyone know if I can feather sex them? or check genders?
No idea, but congrats! Looks like a lot of splashes!

I hatched 14 out of 14 yesterday. 100% yes!!!!
wee.gif

Two of my 17 that just hatched. One is a buff orp and the other a buckeye.
Cuties, congrats!

Is this a HAL egg? When was it set? There is no discoloration on the outside? They dont move at all.
Bacteria will stink at some point, if its not in too long put back and keep an eye and smell on it and candle it again in a day or two.
I would think you could see life like the other eggs you have in there by now if its for the HAL.
