The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

This is my BLRW chick. I've never hatched them before - does anyone know what color this one will be? I'm assuming not black.

Blue laced red.

I have eggs both in the incubator and broody. So far I've got one egg thats hatching in the incubator but not a peep from the eggs under my hen.

What is the general opinion - are hatch rates better with a broody or bator?

That one wasnt her. That was one jumping out to get to her box but she looks like that now. just still smaller. Her buddies are taking care of her and still giving her electrolytes every couple hours. She was at the waterer last time I looked but didnt see her drinking. Now every time she sees me she runs over and opens her mouth. Silly chicken

Oh! Faked me out. lol...Well, she sounds like she's doing better though. She thinks she's a baby Robin at this point..feed me, water me!

I LOVE the little nobly bump on baby turkeys! its too cute!

Thats its "snood" - at the baby stage (poult) we like to call it a "snoodlet" - yeah, silly, but at least it sounds better than "snoodle."

Doing pretty terrible here...

One cockatoo hatched and is doing good. I had taken him out of the nest right before the second one hatched. The other hatched and was fed twice by the parents and then killed. Cockatoos usually only want to raise one. I guess they liked the first one. Normally I will take the second one out at a few days old. This is quite a loss for us.

The silver pheasant that was pipped had pipped just below the air cell and had fluid all over the place and was very stuck. I freed up his beak and head so he could breathe, but there was still blood so i left him like that. He died last night. He was really weak when I saw what was going on and probably had already sucked in fluid.

Out of the shipped Serama eggs with wonky air cells, they have all quit except one. That one is growing a bit slow for a Serama but does have draw down today. I'll have to keep a close eye on it.

So for this HAL I have one live baby, the cockatoo, (pics soon). And 8 eggs still trying.

Still no more pips. My poor little SS chick is lonely! I did a quick candle. There are 2 more internal pips in Polish eggs. I could see their little beaks tapping on the inside of the egg. The others are still moving, but not pipped internally. I think the hours the bator was accidentally turned off delayed my hatch. :/

GOod luck with those turkey eggs!!

Maintain air flow at all costs--- pipped chicks need more oxygen than non-pipped, and hatched babies need MUCH more oxygen. Oxygen comes from a good air fl ow thru the incubator. 

condensation is ok---or not is ok too. Less is better-- what does hydrometre read?

Temp at 97 + is ok. 

With all that condensation the temp really does need to get below 99 as the babies can't breath well when the condensation is so high and hot at the same time. 

Humidity SAYS 60ish, but I've felt that its been off, and the temp went DOWN. having trouble getting it above 90.
