The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

Help!
I have a chick that started to hatch yesterday at around 4 in the afternoon. since then its made amazing progress and zipped right the way round the egg over night. there is about a 3 mm gap where it has zipped and you can see his feathers. When i looked closely shining a white light through the incubator ( the incubator light is amber so didnt notice it before) i noticed that there is some yolk on his feathers! I've never had a chick with this before.

there is no blood (phew) but should i just leave him to do his thing? its nearly half 1 where is am so he is nearly coming up to 24 hours or hatching,

THe intense colors are very cheerful. What dye did you use, sorry if you already mentioned that.

Thanks! My son picked up Neon Food Coloring and added that to the cups with the regular Easter Egg dyes of the same colors...He used vinegar with them too and i know I saw my daughter adding more of the food coloring to the cups as she went...so 4 little bottles of that are basically empty now. lol

I've had 5 ducklings hatch, one on Friday, another on Saturday and then 3 more on Sunday...I think my incubator must be running hot. So far nothing out of the other 6 eggs.

Leave it. If it is strong enough it will survive!

I now have 2 of 10 out, one Gold Laced orp and a splash orp. Still waiting for the remainder of the clutch!

I want to thank everyone for what has been another great Easter Hatch along. I wasn't able to participate as much as I would like because of work stuff, but as always it is such great fun. It has been very neat to see how much this hatch a long has grown in the 3? years I have participated in it. I could not have kept up without Ron's digests, so a big THANK YOU to you Ron. As well to Mike, Happy Chooks and Sally for keeping it going strong. THANK YOU! And of course if I forgot anyone else, Thanks to you too!!!

For the record, this was my largest set count to date of 103, I also had staggered hatches going throughout the week, so I am hoping that accounts for my poor hatching with only 61 hatched. I had several that started to zip and die, I believe they drowned. While my humidity was normal for hatching at about 65%, I had to open the doors a couple times to get out chicks, as well as the air cells didn't go down as much with the staggered hatch. So I live and I learn, thankfully most of the eggs were mine not paid for.


Once again, thanks to everyone who made this event happen. I look forward to it every year!

Its really hard to see on the camera but on the left hand side of the picture the feathers have some yolk on them.

Your welcome, add some electrolytes to the waterer when u brood them, it will help

this is always in the hatching 101 article I will paste it just in case you dont have anything on hand you can make some....

DIP THE BEAK OF THE CHICK IN THE WATER BEFORE YOU TURN IT LOOSE in the brooder. A taste of water right away helps them to find more water soon. If your chicks are at all stressed, add about 3 tablespoons of brown or table sugar to each quart of water for extra energy. Homemade Electrolyte Recipe for weak/ill chicks
2 C. Water
2 TBL. Brown Sugar, honey or molasses
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp. Baking Soda
Mix until all dry ingredients dissolve & Keep refrigerated
You could also use electrolyte drinks Gatorade or Pedialyte, or
3 drops of POLYVISOL (liquid childrens A-B-D vitamins)
Slowly place small drip along inner edge of lower beak,
BE CAREFUL FEEDING CHICKS THEY CAN EASILY ASPIRATE LIQUIDS!

The chick is doing well! You can't even tell the difference between her and the others. I got some electrolytes and put that in their water for them. I ended with 6 chicks in all. One of the chicks pipped but never started zipping. When I came down in the morning to check on my last 2 eggs, the one was just finishing pushing out of the shell and the other was completely still in its shell in the same place it was when I went to bed. I'm not sure what happened to it but it didn't make it.

But thankfully I have 6 happy little babies running around the brooder to ease the pain!
This is good news! Hopefully she keeps growing strong! typically after a week you will know how she fared overall! Welldone!

Some of us had a tough time over winter with this dumb weather, most of us only had good hatches running completely dry, but your not on our coast so not sure what went wrong, and then you had the mia eggs!! good grief, and then the splatter eggs from usps!! very weird!!
