I am so happy!!

When we started this HAL my dogs Killed my RIR!

And now I can say that the eggs HRIR eggs I bought and had shipped are ALL PIPPED!! all 11 viable day 20 is today!
Initially 2 I had to chuck as they were cracked bottoms and rollers, and one I think was infertile or had internal damage from shipping, it too had a big moving air cell and never did anything so I cant call infertile because I didnt breakout to analyse.

I will have HRIR chicks tomorrow and maybe some late tonight if I am lucky!! YAY go chickies!!

Oh I pray I get all 11 and no issues!! If it pips its got great chance!

What can I do for this little ones vent? It has been like this since it hatched. It came out fast and I had to put it in a cup to absorb it's yolk. Now it just had poop stuck. I gently washed with warm water. It's acting totally fine. Eating and drinking. Of course now I put it back in the brooder and another chick went to peck it's vent. Ugh. Help please :-(

cloacal prolapse? never seen that in a chick not sure what to tell you, olive oil so poop slides off and if you have to trim feathers, both of which could cause others to peck it so if you resort to that you may have to separate? how is it otherwise eating drinking what poop look like?

It's time to announce the winner of the Best Hatch Participant.

This prize goes to a member that is supportive and helpful to others during the hatch.

We discussed it, and even received a PM suggesting this person, so this year's Best Hatch Participant is..............

Cynthia12!

Congratulations! You have won a 1 year GFM!
Congratulations!!! You deserve it! You helped me! Sadly, my twins stoped growing midway. I got 2 left! Thank you so much for the information on twins!

Quote: ohhhhhh I hope so!!!! I gotta get some work done, cleaning my kitchen with this on the table is NOT getting my cabinets all wiped out and cleaned up! LOL my sink is overflowing and my dishwasher still needs emptied HA HA HA but chicks first and foremost, have to do an egg run and turn and peekaboo bator time.....

Have a nice afternoon everyone!

Oh gosh if you've never seen it then I really got lucky :-/ this was the chick I had to pinch the remaining umbilical string off after it was done soaking everything up. It was weak the first night but I gave it poly vi sol. Next morning was acting like all the others! Poops normal and eats and drinks. It's the smallest chick too. I have it tucked in my bra right now bc I'm worried about putting it back in and getting pecked now that the feathers are away from the vent it's easier for the others to see :-(

Oh I wanted to add. At the very end of it's vent (the pointed part part sticking out) it looks like it has a tear. Like a teeny tiny one.

Okay, so I broke a rule.

I don't believe in helping breeder chicks hatch. I think you are taking vigor out of your flock if you do. I don't mind if it is a layer, or a meat bird, but not with a breeder.

My Easter hatch went well. They started piping on Friday morning, early, and by Saturday afternoon I moved the chicks to the brooder. I always try to leave unhatched eggs in the bator for a few days in case I have some late hatchers. I needed the hatcher cleaned out for another batch, so on Sunday evening, I took an unhatched egg out of the bator and just as it was about to be tossed, I heard a faint peep. It is from my breeders, but I just couldn't stand it. I candled to find the air cell and opened a hole. The chick had internally pipped, the membrane looked good but the chick was not moving. To make a long story short, I stayed up till 2am working the little booger out, thinking the whole time that I would end up culling it because it wouldn't help at all. Whenever I touched it, the chick would peep, sometimes loudly, but it wouldn't try to get out. It never kicked, it never pecked, it just sat there waiting for me to get it out. I finally was able to free it from the shell. The yolk was fully absorbed, it was sticky, but the bird was well formed, physically. It was a bit "mushy" but otherwise looked good. I gave it a bit of physical therapy (gently stretched it's neck, wings, legs, etc.) and some PolyViSol. I put it in a cup with it's legs under it and left it in the bator. When I got up Monday morning, the chick was out of the cup and walking around the bator! I moved it to the brooder and if it weren't for the blue food coloring I put on it's back, I wouldn't be able to tell it from the others. Now, I still won't use it for breeding, but I have to admit that I am glad that I didn't toss the little darling.

What the heck, I guess I'm just an old softy, afterall...........

Zero (0) of my shipped Marans Hatch-a-Long eggs hatched! I had 4 batches of eggs: 2 batches from ebay (28 eggs) and 1 batch each from 2 different byc'ers (14 from CA and 14 from the Carolinas) and none hatched BUT 17/18 of my Araucana eggs hatched that were set with the marans so it wasn't me, my incubator, or incubation methods nor do I feel USPS was to blame as the boxes were in perfect condition and i know the poster workers in or small office and my carrier personally because it is a rural area and we all went to high school together. I was sold old/non fertile eggs!

Of the ebay eggs all were well packed and intact. 21 candled clear at day 14 and the remaining had blood rings so all were discarded. Of the eggs from CA: 2 were cracked when I opened the box (but she has sent 2 extras), 3 started leaching and smelled horrible at day 3, 7 more were clear at day 14, so only 2 of those made it to lockdown - none hatched. Of the eggs that came from the east coast: all beautiful dark shells but i couldn't see a thing both times I candled so i included them in lock down but none hatched. Of my Araucana eggs: 18 set, 17 made it to lock down and ALL 17 hatched!

So my final count was: 48 marans eggs shipped, 46 of those incubated with 18 of mine, 16 marans and 17 of mine locked down at day 18 - 0 marans and 17 if mine hatched!

Us oldies..I think we get softer and softer with age. :) I am glad you have your little one, it will be your baby for a long while, maybe a real long while if it's a girl and you decide to keep her. Keeping it if it's a boy?

More like the sand was damp when I put it in there. I have no idea how to dry it out

Just for future refrence don't use the same sand again it will hold bacteria really well. Some people are anti sand and chickens at all because of this. Popcorn or those dehydrating packs you get in cloths or shoes should help.

You can dye it blue if it does not need to go back in. It looks ok to me but im not an expert. But blu kote or the like will stop the picking.
