This thread gets a good bit of traffic.. I think I've dealt with this once before but just can't remember how it went. Is there any chance of this self-correcting or do I need to intervene? I don't want to open the hatcher as others are zipping. :/ Keeping it dark in there so others don't take notice.

add all your chickens (secretly at first)
minus roosters
minus non laying pullets
minus broodies
minus chicks
minus any grow outs
minus 10% loss due to future predators or illness
minus any you have for sale
minus those you are thinking about selling
minus any selected for freezer camp
calculate how many you have left.
thats REALLY how many chickens you have!!
You can further reduce by 40-60% if you have bantams

and if the birds lay less than 5 eggs a week, reduce 10% for each egg below par.
I have minus 20.
I suppose I should go out and buy some. If I buy 20 that means I take it back to zero!

That's Common Core math.

I think that just may be the funniest and funnest thing I've ever read!!
I'm still laughing, and I'm certain these mathematics will pop into my head every time I think about doing anything with them...And I Will Laugh Some More!
Haha!

It might be self correcting--the problem is that the other chicks may decide that the open navel is dinner and will peck it.

This is a time for a bit of wound ointment without cain in it or vetricyn. Put the little guy into a teacup that it cannot get out of and leave it in the incubator. Have every thing ready and do it quickly. The pipped eggs will be fine if you are fast.

Do not pull on anything.

THANKS!! The others won't be a problem; I've made sure of that. And all other eggs were a loss, I'm guessing due to power outage with our snow this week. :( But anyway that clears me to do whatever necessary. I wondered about ointment. Is Vaseline best without medication? Or plain Neosporin?

I have chicken eggs in my LG incubator due to go on lockdown tomorrow. Wish me luck and blessings.

Also, I have duck eggs in my homemade incubator. The duck eggs came from a duck nest I found in the backyard by a palm tree down beside the lake. The duck began setting on the eggs on last Saturday (6 days ago) when I missed her. On Tuesday 3 days later she abandoned the nest when a cold weather front came through with heavy rain and very cold weather. The duck stayed on the lake swimming with the other ducks and the duck eggs got very cold. That night I moved the eggs to my homemade incubator and tonight 3 nights later I see development in some of the eggs.

Now I'm wondering if I should have left the eggs alone and see if the duck would have returned to the nest later that night or the next day. I didn't know that eggs could partially incubate and last that long and that cold and wet and still develop. Does anybody have any thoughts on this?
She probably won't take them back now. I'd just keep them in your incubator.

I just don't count mine.

I can honestly say, I have no idea how many birds I have.

Quote: I agree with Ron. Sometimes they correct on their own, and other times they don't. But if you can put them in a cup until it dries up, it will keep the others from bothering it.
