Cool down cycle is for both. Chickens and ducks can benefit from Misting and it helps with Marans for sure. Make sure to stop both before lockdown.

Misting is necessary for Goose eggs

Is that especially true of all real dark egg layers, like the Marans? Or just them in particular? I have a dozen Black Penedesenca eggs in my incubator.

Mist them and use the cool down cycle.

If they were shipped they need all the help they can get.

I read an article about the ability of ucooked popcorn to absorb water versus rice. uncooked popcorn was the clear winner--It has the ability to absorb a lot of water compared to rice.

I raise Cream Legbar so I would probably push those lol. They are very pretty birds.

I also LOVE my Spitzhauben, they are fantastic birds, great personalities, good foragers and lay well.

For coop or free range? I love my Iowa Blues, and the girls (all pullets still) have been laying up a storm since December! And my EE are very nice too, love finding the green eggs! I have a couple hand-me-down Buff Orphingtons who are super sweet and good layers. And some hand-me-down Black Australorps who are laying huge eggs (to me!) and are very striking in appearance, especially in the sun when the green and purple sheen to their feathers comes out.

And I love my Norwegian Jaerhons, but they like a lot of space. Cool little birds tho'! Lay very well for their size. And are very pretty! They're my flyball team's team colors! Ha!
