Quote: Silkies and Naked necks I posted a few pics and made a you-tube video; and I have some Black Copper Marans from Wynette, but I think they got too cold in shipping as I can tell no difference when I candled them.

but they don't stink or smell so I left them in anyway!

I'll check out your video. Good luck! I hope your Maran's hatch for you.

I am also very far behind! Hard to keep up with so much but I do want to sit in the evening and at least skim through! I may miss something really good otherwise!

This is my first hatch so it's all good! So far I have 4 chicks hatched and hopefully 21 more but I highly doubt my 8 marans are actually going to hatch. Dang that dark shell!

Cinco de Mayo will depend if my silkies are broody at the right time. I have to give back the borrowed incubator.

Keep the faith!! My first one out is active & eating and making all kinds of noise, which has seemed to inspire the rest to pick up the pace. So far, out of 7, 1 out, 1 close to out, 1 pipped & 2 more shaking. Pretty excited, as it's our first try. I was just notified my aunt passed away this morning. She was 92 and one of my fondest memories was seeing her baby chicks. She was a 1st grade teacher & hatched chicks each spring form"her kids". So our first little chick is named Alice.

First, there is no hatch rate contest listed for this hatchalong so don't know if official is warranted here.
Different people calculate hatch rate based on what they want to know.
Divide the number of chicks hatched by the number you set to get your most basic hatch rate.
You can divide the number of developed eggs that go into lockdown by the number of chicks that hatch to see a more defined hatch rate.
If you are doing a fertility check on a pen/flock. Divide the total number of eggs set by the number of clear (non-developing) eggs to tell you what percentage are fertile..and then the number of fertile eggs by the number that make to "lockdown" or hatch to get the hatch rate for the pen/flock.

Hope that is not TMI!  :D

You can see them wiggle in egg cartons, but you have to stare really hard!  It's difficult to see.

I'll bring it up to the rest of the Staff.

Lay it on it's side for hatch.  I'm assuming it is not pipped yet.

Looks like a pip.

Yes, I've seen them and they are very cool.  They are basically a sucker off of "normal" redwood trees.

Some people calculate it by # of eggs hatched divided by # of eggs set.  Others calculate it on # of hatched divided by how many eggs developed. (fertility)

We don't have the best/worst hatch rate contests this year.

There is no hatch rate contest in the Easter Hatch A Long. We record the number set and number hatched for the "Guess the number set/hatch" contests.

Thanks, all! I've been classically conditioned from all of the hatch a longs I've participated in! Haha. Good to know! Now I'm not as mad about my last egg not pipping yet! I would have been 7/7! Haha

@Happy Chooks true, but isn't that a published article, and not just a forum thread? Since it's been brought to attention, maybe it should be reviewed? I assumed that published articles went through some sort of quality control (unlike the forum, which I assume are more personal opinions)

I have read this article and I have followed the directions exactly. I've had great almost 100% hatches with this method, but I've also had less than perfect hatches with this method. I think it just has a lot to do with how close you follow what he says, and you have to factor in the eggs you have, if you handled the eggs more than you should have. There are so many factors that go into hatching and things can go differently every time. Last week I put 33 eggs in lock down and got 8 that actually hatched. This week for the hatch along I put in 55 for lock down and have already got 23 hatched with several more pipping and zipping. I didn't do anything different with either hatch, except I used a different incubator for one, so really it's all a learning game and you learn something new with every hatch. Good luck to you.
