General rule of thumb is to wait 24hr.

Yep.

We hatched 2 of our 3 incubated eggs, Very happy with the percentage for a newbie with a $13 incubator! Fun to be part of the hatch a long with all of you BYCers! Thanks!

Thanks, I just checked on it again and a tiny piece of shell is off but not the membrane inside it. It is not brown but pale yellow where the piece fell off, but I think the membrane has become too tough for the chick to break or the chick is weak. Its still cheeping though. I will give it another half an hour and then go in.
believe it or not after tapping on the incubator for almost 30 minutes, the chick broke free on its own. Almost 28 hrs after pipping, one would think its weak and tired but its running around everywhere and jumping from one tray to another. And in the process, it created such a ruckus that two more zipped and came out within a few minutes.

Thanks again everyone and good night for now!

I have a glued chick! What do I do? It had pipped, but seemed stuck, so I helped it a little and put bacitracin on the membrane. Well over the hours I was helping it a little at a time. I finally touched the membrane, and it's hard as a rock! We've been working away at the shell, but its head is glued down so everything is a struggle.

As you noticed that my patience helped, however since you have already started helping the chick, its very important to keep the membrane moist.
I would say at this point run a shower in the bathroom to create a humid environment.
Wet a wash cloth in hot water and then squeeze it out.
Take the egg out of the bator and wrap it in the washcloth and go sit in the bathroom.
Open the wash cloth and start removing the egg shell chip by chip with a blunt tweezer.
Do not remove the membrane if its glued to the head and the back.
The object is to make the membrane wet enough that it will fall off on its own. If there is not one already, make a hole in the membrane for the chick to breathe.
Once the top portion of the egg shell is gone, the chick should be able to do the rest.
Warm up the wash cloth again if necessary and place the chick back in the bator all but its head wrapped in the damp wash cloth.
Its up to the chick from there on.
