Shame on me, but... I kinda suckered my DH into the hatch along. Our local Orscheln is getting new chicks this weekend and he said we she go take a peek just to see what they have, maybe buy a couple to add to the flock if we like any. I said geez we have enough eggs we could just hatch our own (you know I was being totally sarcastic ;-) ). I then mentioned the hatch along and he said, "YES, YES WE SHOULD! LET'S DO IT!!!" As they say, the rest is history. We have no idea what we are doing, but I think I am in pretty good company to get this figured out, thanks BYC!!
Gotta love BYC! If it weren't for my first HAL I would have lost faith in myself.
Woo! Got a line on some BCM eggs for the HAL. :D Now if I could just find some SLWs .... *the hunt continues*.. Too bad the parts I ordered for the new bator I'm making won't be here in time. That just gives me an excuse to hatch out more later.
I never found any.
I have chicken eggs in my LG incubator due to go on lockdown tomorrow. Wish me luck and blessings. Also, I have duck eggs in my homemade incubator. The duck eggs came from a duck nest I found in the backyard by a palm tree down beside the lake. The duck began setting on the eggs on last Saturday (6 days ago) when I missed her. On Tuesday 3 days later she abandoned the nest when a cold weather front came through with heavy rain and very cold weather. The duck stayed on the lake swimming with the other ducks and the duck eggs got very cold. That night I moved the eggs to my homemade incubator and tonight 3 nights later I see development in some of the eggs. Now I'm wondering if I should have left the eggs alone and see if the duck would have returned to the nest later that night or the next day. I didn't know that eggs could partially incubate and last that long and that cold and wet and still develop. Does anybody have any thoughts on this?
I wouldn't worry about it too much. She probably wasn't going back to them.
add all your chickens (secretly at first)
minus roosters
minus non laying pullets
minus broodies
minus chicks
minus any grow outs
minus 10% loss due to future predators or illness
minus any you have for sale
minus those you are thinking about selling
minus any selected for freezer camp
calculate how many you have left.
thats REALLY how many chickens you have!!
You can further reduce by 40-60% if you have bantams

and if the birds lay less than 5 eggs a week, reduce 10% for each egg below par.
I must be doing something wrong. I come out to 7. I think I need more chickens. :p

I have a pip! I'm stuck at home, rather than the agility trial, due to ice, snow and freezing rain, so now I have something to do instead of cleaning the house.

I'm always up for an excuse not to do house cleaning (I'd rather be outside cleaning the coop, weeding the garden, etc) but watching the incubator for pips and zips is a fantastic excuse!!

Sorry for your pups that are missing out on their fun though....

We are OUT. :( Ricky - our barred rock Rooster died last night. SO, unless i go buy an adult rooster, we cannot set any eggs. :( Im bummed. I wanna hatch more eggs.

Are you still getting eggs from his seed? Are you going to be able to hatch some of his chicks?

Oh. I think you answered this already. Good luck.

Question- is giving my leghorn cross 10 eggs too many?? She is the size of an average large fowl.
I don't think so. I've given 12-14 to my large fowl hens before. As long as she can cover them all, she should be fine. Now, if it's super cold there, you need to think about her ability to keep them all warm. (assuming they all hatch)
