Because of health issues during the colder parts of winter my husband takes over caring for the birds. This winter was our first with chickens and we had a lot of predators and not well enough predator proofed cages and unusually cold weather. That and casualties on the road from my ducks cut my flock in half. My husband not wanting to stress me decided not to tell me when we lost a bird so I found out instead when I would be feeling well enough to track through the snow to bring them a treat. We lost all our roosters and some of my best hens. Now that the air is warm enough for me to breath without my lungs bothering me for the rest of the day I have been going outside once a day and spoiling my remaining birds. After a few days of this they remember that I am the printer of tasty treats and warm mashes and come flying when they see me fighting my want through the snow. I feed them in their coop with the heat lamp I made my husband add when I found out about my lost birds but it is nice to have the girls cheering me on as I struggle through the hip high drifts..
JekkaLynn, I am so sorry you lost birds to the hard bone of winter. I hope you can think of some ways to make their winter more survivable. You have electricity to your coop? I can just see your girls cheering you on. The things they have to do to keep you up and out in the cold struggling through hip high drifts - and happy.

Hallo, hatch herd! I finally got sucked into the thread. For the thread mods: I will NOT be participating in the actual HAL, as I hope to set my eggs sooner. If for some reason my plans change, I will post and make it really obvious that I'm entering

In other news - I'm getting a Brinsea incubator!! Yaaay!!!!! The one I have now is a cheapy styrofoam still air, and it has been horrible! DH has insisted on getting me a new bator for a while, now, and I kept saying no. Well, I finally caved.

Hope all here are well!

Hi Red! Welcome! Maybe you can hatch along. And wow, do you know how many wives out there are saying...if only, my DH would say, get yourself a new bator!! Oh yeah..glad to see you here!

My friend used single wardrobes, lay down with the door taken off and chicken wire over the top for rabbit hutches in his garage when we were young. I suppose the same would make a great brooder. There has got to be some cheap or free ones on the internet (do you guys get freecycle?)
