I also say fiction.  Barnevelder eggs are very round, to the point that you have to candle sometimes to even know which end has the air sac.  Males and females hatch from those eggs.

I agree, my vote is fiction. Some of my marans eggs are beach ball round, and really can't tell which end is which. Plentiful roosters from those! :barnie Also I have a hen that always lays super pointy eggs and she has made plenty of female chicks.

I have another theory though---I have to wonder if the males are hardier and hatch better and the ones we lose during incubation are often female. There seems to be such a higher roo/hen ratio. I wish there were a definitive way to tell if the the quitters were the girls, it would explain the high number of roosters I seem to get lol!

ok, I see people are posting egg totals here, so... I managed to get all 9 to fit in my mini!!! 2 B/B/S laced red wyndotte 2 olive eggers 5 CCL :weee
I like this setup! Do you just hand turn? What is your technique? I also have a mini and wild love to put some more eggs in. I am very busy at work and just don't have a lot of time to hand turn.

It looks very nice but you can get more eggs in there:
So Ron, are you donating? ;) Well yesterday my incubator was sitting at the magical temperature of 99.5 all afternoon. I put the eggs in today and a few hours later, it was at 102.7. Turned it down, went to work, got home and it's at 92.7. I hope I haven't killed my eggs on day one. And I feel pretty dumb for having a spiffy new bator and not using it right. Does anyone have a hole I can hide in?

Ok so I was looking through here and saw that with the one with the turner in it (the TSC innovators one) you should put all the eggs your an if into it a di hens hens ou candle candle ne sthat arent fertile you pitch and you take the rest and put them into the turners nd i was like. Mom I need to gather a few more eggs for the HAL and there like ohh great more babies but the funny thing is I have to do a second hatch after these to complete the orders I have for people so LOTS of babies so that means next year I should prob build my self a cooler bator how many of you agree????

Don't worry so much. 102.7 will not kill them. The temps should stabilize soon. It is normal for the temps to be odd on the first day.

I set my first batch the end of February,my ducklings hatched 2 out of 3 :)
I kept the temperature at 90 to 93 the whole time :) Metzer farm said a low temperature is better than too high!
