Now I have a dumb newbie question. I would like to candle with the kids on day 4. Would that be Tuesday or Wednesday?

Just like a newborn baby, the day they are born (set) is not Day 1, it's Day 0. Twenty four hours after they are set starts Day 1. Be very careful candling that early, the developing connective tissues are extremely fragile for the first week and any handling should be as gentle as possible. The kids may not be able to see anything, anyway. I recommend waiting until at least a week before you candle.

I am very sad I have to pull out. My hen that started to go broody decided she wasn't to serious about and stopped sitting :(

At 1:53 pm on March 14th (my birthday), I set 29 eggs.(Nope, not my age! My husband would not have been pleased if I set THAT many!)
12 Black Penedesecas ( Thank you Chicken Canoe)
3 Olive egger with EE roo
5 blue egg EE hen with EE roo
9 tan (most from RIR roo with either RIR hen or black sex link hen) a few are probably EE roo over RIR hen (but I didn't note which were from which coop).

Ok we'll just wait until day 7 then. I don't want to mess anything up .

The egg starts developing within an hour of setting.

If the eggs are set before noon, the first day counts since it will have developed for 11 hours or more.

The app mentioned before and the calculator I posted count set day as day one.

Added: we get into this with each hatch a long. It matters because if you do not calculate the days correctly, incubation temps can be off.

I set late Friday night, so I guess I'm in! I hope I'm right that there is nothing wrong with setting eggs on Friday the Thirteenth. I'm hatching EEs and Campines.

Hi Wisher...he he..I set mine 2 minuets past midnight..so the 14th it was.
