Eek! Just candled my HAL eggs - early I know but I did it anyway! 9/10 are developing! One bantie looks clear but I'll leave it in there a while longer. I've got some EE and darker mixed eggs in there so got to candle something new, that was fun. Development hasn't been a problem this month tho', lockdown has! Oh well, it was a fun 5 minutes!

Okay, I got some pictures of my eggs. These first three are all different eggs. You can see how they just ...... don't look good. This is a picture of what the four that may still be okay look like. Input, please?
I see nice veins in all of those eggs. One of them even has an easily seen embryo.
The second from the bottom will either be fine or the embryo will die and there will be a blood ring.
I was thinking the same thing but being so early made me wonder. Would be nice if they all looked the same wouldn't it.That would be to easy wouldn't it !

Yes it would!

There are so many different patterns that you see inside an egg that are normal. It can be quite confusing.

do you mean these are the four that might be ok but you still have concerns of the first 3 because of the dark mass? Looks like some veining on them but could be smear lines on the outside shells?

The eggs are all pretty clean. On one, you can see a dark spot that is soiling from the coop. But the top three images are what ten of my eggs look like. Also, when I turn them slowly, the darker stuff inside drifts around like loose sludge.

Thank you. I am hoping they are okay, but I'm not holding my breath. We will see what happens.

Well I broke down and ordered my spot check from brinsea today. Hope it gets here soon. I'm worried that I may have cooked my eggs. :( I've never seen my acurite or meat thermometer go above 100 but that digital one I got has said 104 a couple times. Then again when I tried to calibrate it I could never get it to say 0c. The lowest was 1.4

Well I'm sure you'll have more success this time around! And so far everyone on this thread has been really helpful, so you'll have a bunch of support! This is my first time with a new incubator and first in a few years! Last time I hatched was about 10 years ago, but I'm very excited to get back into it! Did your eggs come through the mail or from a local breeder?

Well I'm glad to know that this can still be appealing for a long period of time.

I got my eggs from a local breeder. They have a cute little farm with mostly Heritage Breed and/or rare breed animals.

I would totally hold onto all of those. There are still visible vessels - as a rule I don't pitch anything that looks even vaguely vesseled until they disappear, leaving a fuzzy, mobile ring of blood and a clearly dead embryo that is grossly undersized for the egg date, non moving, and no longer distinct. Eggs change rapidly - and there is a stage where they go from that spiderweb of veins to a more consolidated appearance where you can really second guess yourself. There are still veins, but they are finer and greater in number.
None of those eggs have the ring of death - let them sit for about a week and check them again!

Oh yeah, it's great fun! I mostly enjoy being around and looking at adult chickens, they are much better looking after a year or two, to me at least. I have Heritage and rarer breeds too, so they normally take longer to grow up. I never end up having time to play or fuss over the babies, so I really start enjoying them when they are old enough to be out-and-about, and they rush over to see me. My boyfriend says they don't rush over to him or anyone else, so it makes me feel good when they recognize me. They know me as the Human-slave treat lady. But incubating and having fluffy babies is fun too. I'm sure once you have some success you'll enjoy it.

That will be nice since they didn't have to travel through the mail, I've heard they can be trickier that way. Your ameraucanas will make for really fluffy chicks!
