I wonder how many husbands have threatened that? Mine has not. Someone might point out his non animal hoarding tendencies!

Yes, I just tell him he can buy more video games and he's all smiles again. I even told him I wanted to buy a bunch of GFF chicks for $59 a piece and he said he didn't care. Thank god I'm to reasonable to actually do it.

That is something I have wondered about. All Icelandic chickens now are descended from a small flock that was on an isolated island. The breed was thought to be lost before that flock was found, and since then conservation efforts have been made to expand the numbers. Icees can't be bred out with other breeds because of their unique bloodlines and how long they were isolated with the Vikings. It is good to know that there are others breeds having this same issue, though, and not just my birds. Thank you.

I'm having the same trouble with my cream legbars. I've been thinking of mixing some regular brown leghorns back in to strengthen the lines back up and then cull out until I get the right colors.

I have made 2 observations over the years.
First is that either of the Brinsea 20's are so easy and 'plug and play' that you get great results and get hooked. Everyone I know who got the Brinsea 20 wishes they got the 40 ( I ended up with 2 20's at one point).

The other thing is with hand turning. I had a homemade cabinet thing that fit about 75 eggs in that I had to hand turn. I was in there that long it used to cool down too much and took ages (a few hours to get back to temp). I did not have a good hatch rate...
I got a big thick bit of wood 3x4 or 4x4 and put it under the whole cabinet on the left side so it tipped the whole thing. A few hours later I took it out, leaving it flat and a few hours later put it under the right side, tipping the cabinet the other way. It took a few seconds and turned the eggs as efficiently as my brinsea 20's ever did.

This method may be of use to the busy person...!

Huh... I've thought about that... got an old cabinet bator w/out turners, has a slide under the rack thing to turn them, but the racks don't fit my eggs well...

My problem is that my bator is WAY too heavy, it's a huge redwood Leahy... I've been tinkering with an idea for a tilt-table base for it, maybe? :/

EEk in your new shower... Too much work goes into those tile showers, I know I do them. I couldn't put babies in there

That is worth a try. A lot of work and lots of hard culling will be involved but it could help the gene pool. There is another BYC member that made an out cross to a Rose comb Leghorn to be able to create a Rose Comb Cream Legbar. So it is possible.

Well I broke down and ordered my spot check from brinsea today. Hope it gets here soon. I'm worried that I may have cooked my eggs. I've never seen my acurite or meat thermometer go above 100 but that digital one I got has said 104 a couple times. Then again when I tried to calibrate it I could never get it to say 0c. The lowest was 1.4

My first time hatching my incubator got up to 105 for a very long time. It is a still air. But out of 12 eggs 4 hatched out perfectly fine and the two roos are the father's of the eggs in my incubator now. To which it had spiked to 104 last night on me as well but that was under 30 minutes. I hope all the best for your hatch
