Question: Does anyone have any experience with the black Japanese bantams? She had put a couple of them in for me but said that they have a fatal allel and 1/4 die in the last 2 days of incubation. Wondering what other's experience is with these.
I have some Scots Dumpys coming in July, they also have this gene when bred short leg to short leg.
I would do some research to see if there are ways to avoid the fatalities.
You have the patience of a saint! I have candled 3 times already.

I am too nervous about dropping them. Plus, there's not much to see before one week LOL!

Just in case you want the same eggs I have, we got them from Melissa and Don at Nonesuch Farm in Conroe or New Caney, Texas (borderline area). They advertise on Houston Craigslist. They have Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas, Salmon Faverolles, and Jubilee Orpingtons. However they are having some 'too fluffy to mate' issues with the JO's so they don't have eggs available right now. They have local pick up and ship as well. I met Don in person once (gave us tour of the farm) and talked to Melissa on the phone once so I don't know them very well but they seemed like very nice people. They are proud of their eggs and were very accommodating to us. Don't think I'm selling you here - I just like to share about people that have been nice to deal with.

I have bought from them as well. Great experience.

I candle mine to check for cracks, porous shells, and which end the air cell is on (with some of my eggs, it's hard to tell and I have incubated a couple upside down because I didn't check them) the day I set them. I likely won't candle again until I move them to the hatcher on day 18 or 19 (whenever I get around to it.)

That is the first time I have heard that BJBs have a fatal allel. I will have to do some research on that just for my own curiousity. I have had whole hatches that died in the shell in the last three days of incubation. I opened the eggs to find 40+ fully developed dead chicks. I still don't know for sure what caused it, but it hasn't happened to that degree since. I still do have a few die late from time to time, but I also have a few that are not fertile, a few that are early quitters, and a few that quit mid cycle.

Yep, found it in several locations. That is interesting. I am not surprised to find that I have never heard of it, I don't raise bantams at all - I'm a LF girl!

I'm beyond help.....I have 56? eggs in incubators and just blacked out for awhile this morning because I got this confirmation on an order of 20 chicks??? I need help...lol

Today I hit 15 days with my silkie eggs. I'm using this new incubator by rcom called a pro 10, which fits 10 regular eggs. I've had 11 swimmers since day 7. The incubator works well except for the humidity, which I have trouble controlling.

Can't wait for the babies!

I was planning on doing some research to see if there were ways to increase chances and avoid fatalities. My eggs have been going strong since day 3! I was amazed with these eggs how clearly I could see so quick...of course, half of them are white (Spitzhauben) and they are the first white ones I've incubated....lol But even the browns are pretty dark veined and clearly visible.

Oh, that's so sad. I had three in my last hatch and two were turkens. All day 20/21 deaths. My three turkens that hatched were the last three out of 16. I began to think it was a turken thing...lol

Get an ad ready for Craig's List!

You might even be able to set up a pre hatch ad and sell them that way.

Go New Caney, lived there for awhile. In Peach Creek Oaks. Just a few blocks (walked it a lot) from the little creek there.
