Rookie question . If you are using turner that hold the egg vertically, when you take them out for lockdown do you lay the eggs horizontally on the trays?

Some people lay them on their sides others prefer to put them upright in egg cartons. Its just personal preference.

I lay them on their sides.

Yes, but really you can do it in egg cartons standing up as well. Really you just want to make sure to stop turning so they can position themselves. So I lay mine horizontally (flat) on their sides to hatch and have never had a problem. Some prefer the cartons to keep the chicks from playing "football" with the yet to hatch eggs.

Ok phew! I'm not 100% sure but I don't think egg cartons would fit in mine. I'm borrowing from our school to try this out before we buy our own. I have to figure something out for the trays before lockdown. They have large holes and I don't want on of the chicks to get hurt after all this waiting

By trays do you mean turner? That should be removed from the incubator on the day of lock down. Unless by trays you mean something different?

Yeah, it sounds like the turner you are talking about and those do come out just like chicken pickin said. I lay mine flat. For smaller incubators those that prefer cartons cut them down to fit.

This is my first shipped hatching eggs, and they say if you have shipped eggs you should lay them down to hatch (especially if you have abnormal air cells). However, each has their own way, but you for sure have to stop turning.

This is my first shipped hatching eggs, and they say if you have shipped eggs you should lay them down to hatch (especially if you have abnormal air cells). However, each has their own way, but you for sure have to stop turning.

I have always understood the opposite with shipped eggs. That they have better chances being incubated and hatched standing up in the egg cartons. I have not experienced hatching shipped eggs and am in no hurry to try.

It is the opposite--shipped eggs should always be set big end up.

local eggs it does not matter. Shipped eggs often have air cell damage that can kill the chicks if they pip in the wrong spot and the yolk often does not absorb leading to goo clogging the pip hole.

The carton is cut down to allow for air flow in the incubator.
