At what age can chicks drink from a nipple waterer? I'd like to make the chicks a small version of what I have for my big chickens....
Mine start from the second they go into the brooder. But I've had staggered hatches so have 'experienced' chicks in there for the newbies to watch. Doesn't take long for them to learn! I think chicks learn it faster than the adults! (isn't it always that way tho'?) I've got some of the 1L chick waterers from Premier 1 Supplies. But have parts for homemade ones too, just no time!

I have them drinking from them at a week old.

Do y'all use the regular threaded nipples? My chicks didn't seem to really be drinking anything. After a day or so the water level hadn't decreased, and they were such puny hatchlings (all assists) that I was afraid they'd get dehydrated under the heat lamp. They still peck at it, but even with a bone-dry dish they won't really drink much from the nipple waterer. Am I just doing it wrong?

today was full of mixed emotions. i went to tsc and got 6 bantys, im thinking 4 phoenix, 1 frizzle cochin and an unknown. i went to check the chickens after and found one of my favorite boys dead in the coop. i just hatched him in december and im so upset. he was gorgeous. im thinking maybe he starved..i never saw him in the coop really, or he froze last night trying to get into the coop. im just so heartbroken. at least i have 6 more eggs of his type due to hatch on easter. i just moved him to the coop he was in last week, and his dad wouldnt stop mounting him. when i found him was was cold, but limp, and he had no blood. RIP my sweet little monty :hit
Aww I'm so sorry! :hit He was super beautiful.

Tuesday the 31st (5pm) would start your day 18 so you could lockdown Tuesday night or Wednesday morning and still be day 18. Saturday evening would start your day 21.
Tuesday? Really? Wow, somehow I figured it would be Thursday morning.

eta: And I just discovered today is the 29th, not the 28th, so I'm a day behind in everything.

I have one that uses a vertical nipple and another that uses horizontal nipples. If they are having trouble figuring it out, keep using the regular fountain for a while.

Some chicks seem to take longer but they will get it eventually.

thanks everyone

i cried forever. i havent lost a chicken since 2010...LOL LUCK

anyways, here are my TSC chicks i picked up today. i couldnt resist the frizzle cochin they had!

anyone know what the black one and the striped ones could be? i was thinking the striped could be golden phoenix?

Mine are due to hatch Friday but in one of the incubators I have had wiggled since last night! I think I watched off and on for over an hour today just to catch them. I added a little more water to slowly up humidity csse they start early. Ive got silkies and Seremas in that bator. The hovering has begun for me.
