48 hatched

My first time incubating (used broody hen before). I'm very pleased.

Shipped Eggs

• overall 19/38 = 49%
• lock down 19/33 = 58%
• fertile 19/36 = 53%

BYM Eggs

• overall 29/57 = 51%
• lock down 29/30 = 97 %
• fertile 29/33 = 88% (didn't help I broke one)

Eggs combined

• overall 48/95 = 51%
• lock down 48/63 = 76%
• fertile 48/69 = 70%

Shipped eggs were pretty roughed up
My BYM... not all the hens like my rooster and I can't tell the difference between many of their eggs so I just set a bunch to see which ones were fertile.

My last two eggs finally hatched while I was away at church.

The 2 eggs were my biggest and smallest eggs. Check out the size difference here o.o

Looks like a partridge silkie and a black EE!

So that's a total of 7 out of 8!!! 1 was an early quitter.

I incubated 6 eggs, got one to hatch on Friday. Woo-hoo, it's my bantam's first time as a mom. Don't have a picture of the baby; mama is very protective!

PS It's very cold here in Rochester, NY area - currently SNOWING!!! So I haven't taken the chick out from under mama.

Help! Have a concern. The last of my chicks to hatch has the 'waste' stuff still attached to her. It's very bloody. At first I thought she wasn't going to make it, but she's becoming more vigorous by the moment, so I'm guessing she may be okay. It's just this stuff is still stuck to her navel, and she drags it all around. I've left her in a cup in the incubator, but she's really starting to not like this set up, but I don't want that mess getting snagged on something, or picked at by someone else.... I figure that could hurt her? I thought it might dry up, and then I could cut it off, but it isn't drying up. She did a lot of bleeding when she first hatched, but she really seems fine now, just, this stuff won't come off. What should I do?

If it does not look like there is any yolk to be absorbed you can:

Keep her isolated until it falls off
cut the cord carefully and tie it off with dental floss

Make sure it drinks and gets vitamins. Feed some scrambled eggs too.
