Quick question @ronott1 ,or anyone with chicky experiance, do baby chicks have to have a warmer if I can keep the temp in the room at the temp the brooder is supposed to be. Example: my chicks are in my bathtub, in a very small room. I can actually get the temp of the room to stay around 90-95 without the heat lamp. Would it be okay to get rid of the heat lamp and just keep the room at the 90-95 degree mark, and adjust the temps week by week or do the chicks need the heat light?

The chicks need a place to get out of the heat if they want, so I would not make the entire room that warm. You will see broody mamas encouraging their chicks to get out and run around even when its very cold. She is always ready to let them get warm again, but the chicks getting used to lower temps is important. This is anecdotal and I haven't looked it up to see if there is science behind it, but in my experience chicks feather faster when exposed to cooler temps earlier. But you need the heat available to them.

I think this is true. The other problem is containing the poo! They will not stay in a tub long and tubs by their nature are cold so heating the room will not keep them at a good temperature.

You could do it if the bulb fails. I use brinsea and premier 1 brooder plates. They are good artificial broodies.

Final numbers:
47 shipped eggs set
13 hatched, 28% hatch rate.

Addition:
I need more than 13 to fill the coop! I'll have to have another hatch..Any other hatch-a-longs starting soon? I think I can get some eggs from someone near by with the weather warming up. Just have to convince everyone else to let me hatch more. I don't see what the big deal is...I mean I wanted around 35...so a least 20 more would make me happy and hatching seems like the only reasonable way to get them:D
The Cinco De Mayo Turkey hatch has started, but hasn't reached the set date for chickens yet. It's on the 14th.

Quote: Ok, thank you!

Of my 22 eggs I hatched 8, but one only lasted a few hours. It was much smaller then the rest. 3 of my 10 shipped Marans hatched and 5 of my 12 from the local school hatched

That is a tough one.

Do you have an incubator that you use for hatching? If so, I would set the day 24 eggs for hatching and wait on the 21 day eggs.

It sounds like humidity might need to be a bit higher next time ducks are hatched.

Wait until you see pips if you only have one incubator.

I only have the one incubator, it's a little giant still air. I candled when I came home from school and 2 look like they internally pipped, I decided to turn the 3 that are not suppose to go into lockdown for 3 more days and left the other 3 air cell dip up and added more water to the cells on the bottom of the incubator. I will look for a pip tomorrow and if there is one I'm gonna stop turning the last 3. Hopefully this works out because all 6 look like they want out of the shells lol. Thank you and if I made a bad choice let me know!

This might not seem like a big thing to some people, but I'm pretty excited since I've never been on a forum for this long.

Today is the day I joined BYC 4 years ago!

I don't have my badge yet, but I know the mods are busy with other stuff. So it's ok.
Congrats! My 5 yr. is this month!!
