I have 84 eggs in the incubator and about 60 are due in exactly 1 week.

Have you got that darn cough too? I've been miserable for about a week now..come Fri. I do ok in the day, I do cough, but nights are so scary. I cough so hard it's unreal. This has got to stop soon, right?
I am glad you are feeling better enough to come on. I come and go, come and go.

In the UK they coined it "the hundred day cough". The first week is the worst, and the nights are awful. It clings, so you will feel crummy for a few weeks, but will at least be functional after that first week is over!
Everyone here had it and we've been better for a few days. I had it the worst. It started with a fairly bad cough and sore throat but after about 3 days I had a high fever for 4 days and very fatigued. It lasted almost a month in all but the first two weeks were cough madness.

Well, you don't have one yet, go for it for a while until you know what you want for sure!

Note that I said "people," not "friends." (Doesn't mean they're NOT, though) Personally, I think, as an avatar, it's a bit too close to home. I've been dwelling on Avatars, BTW, ever since I watched CAPRICA.

I have had whatever it is for weeks. went to doctor got prednisone. It went away and I could breath again , that horrible cough went away. But once it went off the meds it came back. went though another round of the drugs, it went away again. It is trying to come back again just not as bad. My cough was so bad I thought I'd have to go to the hospital. Glad it is mellowing out. I feel for you ....

@Serenderpity: that is very interesting. I had box turtles once that would happily eat the hatchlings of whatever happened to fall out of the nest into their pen. Nowadays, I feed them baby mice. BUT, I share your circumstance in having enough roosters at the moment. How do you sex the babies, or are they sex linked? I could no doubt use a few snakes around here to help with the rodent population, but I don't imagine boas would survive the Rocky Mountain cold. When I serve pinkies for dinner, the chicks, the turtles, and the bearded dragon all eat from the same plate; it is an amazing sight. Much of what I know about raising chickens - and it isn't a whole lot - I learned from raising lizards and turtles. I am happy you don't waste your male babies.

Ha! Of course!

I think they do that just to get outta laying!

Well, brooding looks like it could get tense at times. I am beginning to have an expanded appreciation for what it means to be a "mother hen." It seemed to me that the hen takes up brooding in order to avoid the advances of an over-amorous cock. In fact I have a hen right now who was running from her rooster when she jumped into the brooder box - and hasn't come out since. My Silkie just TREMBLES over her eggs for the last few days of brooding; it is amazing to watch (is she stimulating them to hatch?), but it surely looks like less fun than laying an egg.

One of my housemates has this crud and she's had it for weeks. She thinks she picked it up from one of the very ill in the assisted living facility where she works part time. What I'm saying is: BE CAREFUL This stuff gets around (I'm in northern Colorado), and it can be lethal.
