The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Update on my incubator.

It looks like when my water system failed and flooded everything, it caused to humidity to get way too high and made the heater malfunction. Sounds right anyway. We ran it all night without any water in it and it slowly got back up to temp. Hubby and I had to pick up a new tupperware container today and rig it for the auto water system. We also picked up a wireless acurite temperature and humidity monitor to make sure this doesn't happen again. The surface area is a bit smaller in the container and humidity is hovering around 25% but I like to dry incubate anyway so we'll see how well this works. I'm sure humidity will be a bit higher once spring gets here and the heat doesn't run anymore. I put my eggs back in and actualy counted them this time...there are 100 turkey eggs in the big cabinet, 26 in the hatcher, and 4 under a broody turkey hen lol. Hopfully, there's a demand for poults soon!

I candled all 24 of my eggs last night after noticing an early quitter that I couldn't find again.
I have 21 wigglers (some are doing the Macarena!) two clears and the early quitter that looks like it was dead at about three days. Nothing really to even see.
This is my best hatch (so far!

) that I have had in six or so hatches!
The problem is that I only expected a few to hatch. Now what am I supposed to do with almost fifty new chicks within a month? I mean, there will be 21 from this hatch, plus the hatch along. Then I have five girls that will probably go broody at any time (their sisters have already hatched out a clutch each over the winter!).

I need to get this math under control.

I'm starting to get a much better understanding on this whole evil chicken math thing. I'm getting the same eggs in 2 days that I used to get in two weeks. Not going to end well...

Not sure if this can help, but I use a quail waterer for the new chicks and those up to about 2 weeks approx...depending on the chicks. I could probably use it for a month with the OEGBs. Chicks can't get into it...and I find it stays cleaner. I use glass sealer jars for the regular chick waterer bottoms (cheaper) but I use the actual plastic tops for the quail waterer bottoms because they don't stick out as much and impede drinking.

Glad you discovered and fixed the issue. Hope everything turns out well, I'm pretty sure it will.

Weird. Just me, then. OK - trouble shooting....

I switched browsers and it works fine in Google chrome.

OK, note to self, use chrome for BYC.

Once again, all is right with the world.

You made me LOL..

I saw my first quail egg yesterday. I never realized how TINY they are!!! It was next to a business card and the card dwarfed the egg. I can't imagine a bird that will grow big enough for people to eat hatches out of that!

Do I understand the pics correctly....is it an aquarium you made your 'bator in?

Yes it is. I found almost all of the materials for this incubator in my barn, which was crammed with stuff when we bought the place. The parts I purchased were the thermostat and timer. I rewired things and insulated the best I could. I scalped a turner out of a microwave that was in the barn without a door or cord. I don't know why it was there, but the turner works and was free. I haven't actually hatched in it, but I built it during my last hatch which was all trouble so chicks went in as a brooder for a bit.

After I disinfected I started a serious build. I like the concept of a bator that transitions to brooder easily.

Oh geeze! I meant to add a pic with my last post. Here's my quail waterer in case it helps someone.

I got mine from an independent feed store in the city. I didn't know they were quail waterers...lol. I've never seen anymore like this since. I really like mine and they're easier to move around without spilling.
