The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Today is Day 19 for my test hatch and had power outage for about 2 and 1/2 hrs. I first placed the incubator on top of the hot water pipes and covered with blankets. It caused humidity to go up the roof. Then I started calling friends if someone would possibly be home early so I can move them to their place. Finally found someone and in my rush did not place anything inside the incubator to keep the eggs from rolling. By the time I got there, DW called that the power is back. I think in my haste and panic, I have done more damage to the eggs transporting back and forth than the power outage would have done.

Oh no I hope they're okay.

Oh I am excited. I just got done making a fun soap for a hatchalong prize... it has egg in it, so I figured all you poultry folk would enjoy that. I can't post a picture until I cut it, and I can't cut it for a day or so...
We have to wait for a WHOLE DAY to see pics?!

... lol, just kidding

. Can't wait to see pics though, homemade soap is awesome!

I'm hatching the Emu eggs because my 23 year old son and my 14 year old daughter decided they just had to try Emus! My son calls them "his" little babies...then why am I doing the turning hmmmmm....

Anyway, we are all very excited for the Emus no matter who lays claim to them. Baby Emus are adorable! All legs!! As soon as they start hatching I will post pics?

Legacy is now almost one month old but we have still kept her in the house instead of putting her out to the coop. I think the kids are worried something will happen to her.

Can't really blame them. We have a brooding area for our little guys out in the coop where she will be safely locked behind wire. Since we do still have two chickens, three ducks, and a turkey, I won't put her directly into the coop until she can fend for herself. She's not even fully feathered anyway.

So she will remain in the house until either my husband realizes we have a "large" baby chick in the laundry room, or the chicken smell over powers the smell of clean clothes! Haha!

Suzy would be honored to know you named another hen after her! She was an extremely kind and humble hen.....

I have ordered a variety of chicks: Speckled Sussex, Lt. Brahma, Silkies, Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, Laced Cochin, Rhode Island Red Roo, and three more Turkeys.

Here is a picture of Legacy....she is watching over the Emu eggs

Legacy is so cute, especially with her fuzzy neck

. She looks (color-wise) kinda like what my "Chicky" (lol, very creative name) looked like! Chicky was the only one to hatch out of the batch so she lived inside for a very long time. She thought she was a dog/human and loved chasing the other chickens with the dogs once she grew up

As a baby sitting on my shoulder (sorry, fuzzy pic)

Chicky as an adult. Maybe Legacy will have similar coloring

Just delivered my chickens to the local Ag teacher for a week; I've got a conference in California and their coop is empty. My ladies have all settle in and are having a great time clearing grass out of the chicken run.

My only layer has settled down in a nesting box, pecking at the straw to make it perfect. I had a surprise when I came to check on the layer-my Black Copper Marans pullet is fixing up a nesting box. WOOHOOO!!!!!!!! I'll have lovely, chocolate-colored eggs very soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Been working with the Ag teacher at the school I work at. I have a year-long job at the school, so the current plan is that I can use the coop and we use my hens/cockerel to hatch out some chickens for the students/school next fall. I'll keep their garden alive during the summer, too. Win-win. Plus, I now have access to a coop that fits 30 chickens and I only have 7 pullets-so far...)

Holy WINDY day, Batman. Wonder if I lost any chickens to the next state.

My rooster got dubbed Fabio today with his amazing hair in the wind.

(Strike a pose, use the wind to your advantage.)

(Just trust me, the hairdresser says.)

(Hello, lovely ladies.)

(You may call me, Fabio.)

(Flapper shot)

(And it's time to pump, you up!)

(This wind is getting ridiculous!)

Hope it's not as bad as you think
