The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I was going to resist..... but I'm in. I didn't realize we are only a little over a week and a half till they need to be set! Yay!

Wow, thank you so much for all the info @Sally Sunshine !!! I will try to read all that overwhelming amount of info!!

I'm building a Coolerbator right now... I think I'll be able to get it done for under 50$. SO much cheaper than anything you can buy that is actually decent!

Good luck!

Ok I have a broody Australorp who has been sitting on her golfballs for a week now, night and day. I also have 28 eggs in the incubator on day 8. I would like to place a few under my hen doring the last week, but need to figure out how and when to move her nest so it isn't 4 feet off the ground. I have had a lot of suggestions, but would like to hear what and when has worked best for the greatest chicken farmers in the world here at BYC.

I always move my broodies and usually have no problem at all. I choose the eggs I want the broody to hatch, and when she seems serious (staying on the nest box all day & at night despite attempted removal) I set up a nice large cardboard box nesting box (cheap and disposable!) in one of my broody coops or a safe corner of the coop. I arrange the eggs I want her to hatch, and then carefully move her AT NIGHT to the new box. It works for me without fail! The broody is so happy to get a whole clutch of eggs that she settles in without much fuss.

The only time I had trouble moving a broody was when I let her set for most of the three weeks in a nesting box, and then tried to move her a few days before the chicks were to hatch because I was worried about them falling out. I put her eggs in a box in a rabbit cage and moved her on them, but in the morning I found her off the nest pacing trying to get back to her old nest, and her eggs were cool!

I ended up moving her back to her old nest, and amazingly, almost all of her eggs hatched despite the disruption!!!

I would suggest taking away most of your Australorp's golf balls except maybe one, and then setting up a nice safe nest for her and moving her to it at night with a clutch of eggs to sit on(or golf balls if you want to make sure she will stay). It might help if the new nest is out of sight of the old one. Good luck!

Ok so i'm really liking my LG incubator( the one i got off the local swap shop). It keeps temps really well and does OK with humidity during the first 18 days. BUT, I don't like the tiny viewing windows and it won't keep humidity for lock down with the plugs out. Had 5 out of 6 of my test hatch make it and NO curled toes which is a first for me. SO, i will be using my own DIY coolerbator for hatching from now on. I think between the two i should do well. Here's hoping anyway. Looks like i will have to set some eggs a little early. I got some BBS Eng Orpington eggs from Lot's A Clucking farms and the oldest were laid on the 16th and i don't want to risk viability by waiting too long. But i have more eggs on order so i will have some for the EHAL. So everything is copasetic at this time. Subject to change at any time of course.

Try putting a jar with a sponge in it-used an aluminum cakepan with 2 sponges to keep up humidity in mine.

Thanks for tagging someone :)
