The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

My dad always told me about his spaniel when he was a kid. He hunted in Mlnnasoda . in the winter he said he'd go out in the snow and call his dog in the morning. A mound of snow would start moving and the dog would be there. hed shake off the snow and be ready to go hunt. That was the first thing I thought of when I saw your avatar .. my dad has been gone for many years. Pleasant thoughts....
What a nice reminder!

I had planned on doing the hatch, I wasn't sure if I had said it outright lol!

This IS my photo from this morning after I posted, though. Ah, the beauty of frost on the grain bin handle in the morning in WI. :)

Such a beautiful pic.!

When I first scrolled down...I thought it looked like a photo shopped half opened eye with the frost as the eye lashes.

So happy it survived the hatch. The best to you and the remainder of your hatch.

Thank you!!

I do like my chickens/breeding stock to be tough.

I have to ask...what does the DH stand for?
Every time I see this I think "darn husband"

I picked up silvers and regulars, thinking if the silvers are weak (as I've read in places), some outcrossing vigor would help. Good luck on your project!
Thanks

. And good to know they are weak sometimes, glad I have some nice healthy ones to cross with them.

Now I gotta get some Salmon Faverolles

Ok...I managed to survive my chores. After surviving the ice, the male rabbits had set a trap for me!
(Sneaky devils!!)
They had dug out under the ends of a piece of 2x4 that's in their pen and covered it with straw.
Didn't see it and stepped on the one end...just about landing on my head.

Came at noon to look at the chick and...THERE WAS NO CHICK!!

He had had enough of the tray confines, he jumped ship and was out gallivanting amongst the eggs below.

So here's the chick 2.5 hours ago...

And apparently he's red? Different but equally as good.

So I stuck him in his own stationary cup to keep him contained.
(And yes...the blue tray and white cup are sitting on top of the other eggs in case anyone's curious.)

But then I heard more peeping!
If you notice in the tray...the second egg from the left has broken shell towards the bottom!
So I turned it over and ta da...a chick is zipping!!

(and the egg IS actually green. It looks tan on here...lol!!)

So like everyone says...be patient.

I think someone asked what type of bird the mom is...she's "supposed" to be an Easter Egger.
Bought two bunches as chicks. She has the colored legs and ear gear but she's buff colored???
And these two groups have cushion combs...looks like someone took silicone and put a glop on each head.
I'm also getting buff colored chicks out of my blue egg laying pair.

They have more upright combs. Both seem equal in toughness, growth and temperament.

That wasn't my photo, it was off the net for a tailored good morning.

Stunning picture! This is one I took last winter of ice on an oak leaf.

And if you think chickens are hard to photograph, try bees!

But when you get one like this, it's worth it.
