The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Yeah, thanks.

I've been in contact with the seller and they offered to ship out a fresh box, I'll cover shipping. Think that's nice of them. :) Can't fault their communication, have been great.

I've got quail eggs supposed to be coming this next week, hopefully those boxes fare well. Looking forward to quail this year. I've been googling the heck out of recipes for quail eggs and quail.

Oh wow! I can't believe I'm finally caught up after reading every chance I got for several days.

Firstly thank you to everyone that donated prizes(I'm completely in love with the shakers and the socks) and especially is/has organized this wonderful fiasco.

Also I totally would love one of the cookbooks so if you decide to sell them after the hatch-a-long please let me know. I also am totally in love with the adult coloring books! And my Mom wants one is there some place we can by them?

Okay so I have some questions and please anyone feel free to throw ideas at me. I would like to join the hal but I would more than likely be setting my eggs on the 3rd(as I hopefully have eggs arriving from MPC on the 2nd), can I still officially join?
Would it be a bad idea to wait with the shipped eggs and set on the 5th? I have never gotten eggs from MPC before. This will only be my fourth hatch, first was silkies and bantams(shipped- 3 inferts, 1 early quitter, 5 late quiters, 8 healthy happy birds-one was an assisted hatch), second was two black oegb(100% set and hatch), third hatch and my only previous hal was Halloween(shipped poorly- 20 Sicilian Buttercups and 2 Partridge rocks all but 4 quit by day 8 complete bust none hatched).

If yes than I will be hatching a mix of chicken eggs(not sure how many yet)
*6 eggs for education from MPC(a prize from the Halloween Hatch-a-long(idk if they send extras or not)
This will also be the first time that we will be trying to hatch our own eggs from our flock as we were new to chickens last year.
*some pure silver laced wyandottes from my flock
*possibly some wyandotte/EE mixes
*possibly some wyandotte/Isa brown mixes
*possibly some silkies
Will update as I can. Please let me know if you need more information.

Oh man, you really need to send me some of those SLW. Those are some beautiful birds.

I will be joining, hatching call ducks

No idea how many yet obviously, as many as I can collect between Valentine's Day and Feb. 29th.

Just an egg collecting note: I've set eggs up to 18 days old (meaning I collected them 18 days before setting) and had healthy chicks hatch. That's the oldest I've ever tried to set, and it worked so I'm just putting that out there.

Welcome!

Call ducks are adorable

Any tips on getting the older eggs to hatch? Seven days is the most I've ever been able to get :idunno

Hm, no special secret in particular, I can tell you that I *DONT* rotate my eggs back and forth while I store them for hatching. I sit them on the kitchen counter in a carton labeled "DO NOT EAT OR REFRIGERATE" and just pop em in the bator when I'm ready.

@Sally Sunshine Awe thanks! It means a lot! :hugs I post on the PA theead all the time and no one responds, so I just gave up. I skim/lurk though.

Welp, no eggs today, either.

Called Palmyra PO, gave tracking, they called back saying they talked to the carrier and he said he dropped the box today (even though marked delivered yesterday). Great, was as work so had hubby check front door - yes, there was a box there, no it wasn't the eggs.

Good news, I now have 2 sets of chicken salt and pepper shakers in hand to send out for contests.
Bad news, my box of eggs is still MIA and no one has a clue where it went.

Called them back, gave tracking number again, relayed that the box left today was not the box I am waiting for, they said they'd check into it and call back. No word yet. I'm thinking it's a lost cause, but makes an entertaining story. Somewhere in the world there sits a box of hatching eggs, that's as much as anyone can tell me. Someone marked it delivered to front porch yesterday, so maybe some frozen and now ice covered box is waiting for someone to come home and notice it?

Bah and rassafrassa.

But on the up side, Woo! - I's got da SHAKERS!!!

sorry about your eggies, but those shakers are special!! thank you again!!

Congratulations on your hatch. I had not had very good hatch rates until this last one. I did something you had suggested at some time on some thread, which was to lockdown for 2 days instead of 3. I had 20 hatch out of 22! Over 90%! I think I had been drowning them by increasing the humidity too early. Thanks for sharing all the tips!
no necessarily lock them down later, but go with what the air cells are telling you to do...

Thanks I will post some pics for you to see if you'd like but the birds we have I'm finding are very flawed. They were bred by a man local to us and his stock was stunning but our cockeral has shown some aggressive behavior and he's on his last chance. The pullets aren't as friendly as I had hoped(one has a single comb) but mostly these chicks are an experiment for us to see how the chicks will turn out and if the aggression is passed down or heightened as it passes down. I have spoken to a few other people on BYC that have not had the lacing or aggression issues with their stock. We may try the breed again sometime if this experiment flops. Our cockeral is huge probably 12-15 lbs and the pullets are really big too so if the chicks turn out to have poor temperaments they will end up in the freezer. We are hoping to find a good heritage breed that can serve as a good meat bird as well as layers. So far my assessment of the ones we have is they're beautiful, but their eggs are kinda small, and they are a bit over the top with putting the rest of the mixed flock in their place, as well as any human aggressive bird belongs in the freezer.
