The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I did not look too long so it is easy to miss stuff but it looks like they can only make Cockerels from pullets at day 3 of incubation. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1439-0272.1992.tb02599.x/abstract

Another article said spontaneous gender change goes from female to male--not the other way because of the make up of males and females. That article said that they do not fully become males--can't fertilize eggs so you get a crowing hen that is sterile.

Woha, talk about useless! :barnie

I forget who I'm quote but
1 I find it interesting that you can do emu eggs ove in America. You need a zoo permit which is a huge pain to be able to hatch them here in aust, although we have millions of wild ones.

On older eggs.
Last hatch I threw in a set of 12 eggs that had been collect over s period ov at least 12 days, then stored in fridge for 3 weeks, and they all hatched. The ones I lost in that set were all less than 7 days old at set.
They were really popular for oil in the 90's, and a lot of people were raising them. Now, it's pretty much just those that either eat them, or keep them for livestock guardians.

The other day, I bought a shipping crate to turn into a new brooder. I fully intended to make room for it in the barn because my husband won't let me keep chicks in the house any more. I was really surprised when he said that I would have to clean out the spare bedroom to make room for it. That was never my plan, but who am I to argue?

We ordered parts for the new incubator this week. I'm still hoping to have it running before the set date for the hatch a long.
