Upon closer inspection i discover it's a flowerbed stone.

She said April Fool !

I took some to share. This pen is 32' by 16' and has netting over the top. It is nothing special, just functional. All my coops are made for functionality, and not pretty I use a lot of recycled wood... like the feeder in this picture, someone had literally thrown it in a ditch down the road from me. I was so excited!

I am just starting to build a mostly identically one to replace to 30' by10' dog kennel that the other 3 peas are in.

Hi Rad, sorry you lost 2 of your chicks. I hate when that happens. Hopefully the last one will miraculously turn up unharmed.

I don't have much faith that it will. It was in the 20s the other night and the chicks are only partially feathered.

Ok. Unless they are blood rings or start to smell I would hold off tossing until day 17-18.... That's when I make my final cull of eggs and it's saved me more times than once with an egg.

Ok so after a few hours she wouldn't go back to the nest so i confiscated the rest of the eggs. How NASTY ! There were 4 way down under everything else and i could tell by the smell it wasn't gonna be good. Those 4 i threw toward the field. Of course one of the bad ones fell at my feet and broke

Brought the rest in and candled, one more was smelling nasty, had about 4 clear, so i have 2 that look promising and 2 i'm just not sure about. That makes 4 ???? The problem is, with them all having set on top of the nasty ones they all have an odor. SO ! I put ? on a couple that i will candle again tomorrow and put them way to one side of my bator, away from the ones i have in there. The others i will candle and if any movement i will keep. So

hoping nothing explodes on me.

Has anyone used brooder plates with quail? Experience?

I dont own a brooder plate

I hang a 40-60 watt incandescent VERY low, with a thermo under it.


One thing I noticed.

Coupla days ago I put the lid on the brooder, but cracked enough for airflow.

They have been SO QUIET.

Not a peep.

I reckon this is what folks talk about the chicks being quieter with brooder plates, cept I got the same effect for cheaper.

As far as the sound level goes.
