The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Went out to check on my chickens this morning we are in a BAD deep freeze right now and it dropped to -10 this morning. Went into the Silkie coop to find this little girl hardly breathing and from her neck up she was pure ice......... The water heater broke and when the water froze my tank exploded and she apparently was the only one who got wet. She seems to be doing better now but she wants to be outside with her flock so bad. I just cannot let her back out until she is fully dry and is breathing better than she is right now.

Psst....chickens love to be dried with hair dryers....

I pray she pulls through.

It is with much dread that I report I will not be able to participate in the Hatch-A-Long. This past weekend a predator killed my only Roo

. Not just my roo but my two easter eggers as well. Fortunately I had just hatched some eggs and I am pretty sure one of them is a roo (only 2 weeks old) but it will be a while before he is big enough to keep the girls safe.

Hopefully next year.
I'm sorry. Let us know if you re able to get any other eggs to hatch. I saw a few people offered.

I just set a batch that will hatch a couple days before time to set for this one, so...I'm in! Easter chicks sounds awesome!

Welcome to the 2016 Easter Hatch A Long!

Not chicken related, but we are relatively new fish owners, small tank in the livingroom. One of our female platy live bearers has been looking pregnant for a few weeks. Well I just took a look at her and SHES HAVING BABIES!!!! So tiny and so adorable! Me and DD are watching her now and we are so excited. I know they are just fish, But I cant help but smile and be excited.
Very interesting! Congratulations!

I hope she gets warm and dry and is able to join the flock soon!

I used to raise guppies, plagues, and mollies(love the balloon dalmations, and the angel hi-fin aka sailfins)

When they are first born they can't swim right away and will sink to the bottom, within a couple hours to a couple days they will start to swim. They need a ton of cover! Most fish that can fit them in their mouths will eat them including their parents. However some parents will not. If you have an under-gravel filter it will almost certainly suck the babies hiding in the gravel up and kill them(this is an older kind) make sure you give them cover throughout the tank by the bottom and the top.

In the future you may want to look for a three way breeder little plastic thing with slats on two sides with a grate that goes in the bottom so the babies fall through and are protected from the mother. When she's done birthing you simply net her and put her out. If you want to give them the best chance possible a second tank is best with a bubbler and a finer gravel but be sure the water quality stays good. They also need a powderized food such as brine worms and or finely crushed fish food. If you have living plants they should be able to live on that as long as they can eat it.

HTH. Miss my livebearers, I currently have only a pair of goldfish that just won't quit. Lol I think they're like four or so years old

you sound like me. I drive by a junk pile and all I see is treasures to build things with. Most people will let you just haul the stuff off. Or craigslist is a great resource for treasures. It is nice to see the peacocks in a place they can roam little. My turkeys have free ranges in the day time but you have to keep a eye on them they love the top of cars, anybodies car....The neighbors 1 mile down the rode used to have peacocks they visited me quiet often. They were so beautiful. Some shot them for being pest. I was so mad.....
This is why I can't let my Bourbon reds free range. I had a Narragansett hen several years back that liked to roost on my husbands truck. He was VERY unhappy about it.
For sure. I built a small isolation hutch using nothing but scraps from my backyard and the empty lot next door. I've been known to pick up stuff from the side of the road that looked promising.
Those are nice little pens! I repurpose as much as I can... I enjoying building, but it is also nice to take something and turn into something for the coop with little work... like this nesting box. The pallet on top is from TSC, they give me the wood pallets the mowers and such come in. The metal is from an old trailer porch, and the boxes were a cabinet my husband found at work.
