The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Lol happy chooks, you had said that maybe my hen was going broody on post #4654. My question was if my hen was going broody and maybe that was why she attached Lili, or the little two months old one that attacks me? :)

Have a question on chick starter if I may.

Local Big R &/or TSC has 2 kinds of chick starter, medicated & non-medicated. Is one better than the other?

Thanks!!

A lot of people feed medicated food as a preventative measure, but I personally never have. As long as chicks are given a clean, safe environment and allowed to slowly build a tolerance to cocci then medicated food is just unnecessary. If any of my chicks do get cocci (none have in the year I have kept them) then would treat them with the proper medication.

However, this is my opinion and others do feed medicated food regularly. However, keeping an animal on medication as a preventative helps the organism or parasite build up a resistance and generally is not good in the long run.

I hope this helps.

I feed them flock raiser. I have not had to treat for cocci in three years.

Thank you! I haven't used the medicated before, but was just curious as to if there was benefits or not. I will continue to not use it! Blessings!!!!

Thanks for the info! Have always used the non-medicated, but didn't know if there was pro's to use the medicated.

Do you used flock raiser from day 1?
Yes!

For the first day or so I will grind some up in a big size mortar and pestle that I have. They do very well on it.

Ah, I misunderstood. I thought it was Lili that pecked you, not the chick. Chicks peck to establish dominance too. Just tap her on the top of her head with your finger and it acts as a peck to correct her behavior. It's worked for me.

I feed them flock raiser.
I feed Flockraiser as well, and have never had cocci in my flock. But we are in a dry climate too, cocci is more of an issue in a damp climate.

Do you used flock raiser from day 1?
Yep!
