The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

My DH surprised me yesterday when he told me to start collecting for the HAL. I was planning on a few days worth. So i get to SET ALL THE EGGS!!! We are averaging 6-8 per day now with a couple of niner days. I have no idea what i will do with the possible 70+ chicks! Well.. That's not entirely true, I will sell them cheep! They all will be from the purebred hens in my sigature crossed with a mix roo of unknown origin and a Ayam Cemai who may or may not be a cross. My first hatch was these and they are a cute colorful bunch.. I have to get busy and build a LARGE temporary brooder box..

I should have red star hatching in the next day or two for the 4th hatch for me. These are shipped eggs and are questionable at this point.

Yay! I wish I could hatch that many.

Day 22 of my test hatch and 7 of the 8 have hatched with the 8th one pipping!!! My 1st ever hatch by myself (usually my parents did it with my boys)! Praising the Lord! So that means if this one makes it out of the 11 eggs we set, 8 hatched! God is good!

Congrats!

My eggs are taking their own good time, but I keep thinking I hear chirping. I know that the eggs under my silkie are hatching (even though she jumped up and down on them today in her excitement to get out to eat), but the eggs in the incubator, some older then hers and some the same age, are still showing no signs of hatching. I hope they aren't all dead.

Good morning everyone! Started collecting eggs, figured I can change out the oldest as it gets closer to set day. Happy Friday!

Nice eggs!

Has anyone had any experience with the warming mats sold at TS? They were marked down from $49 to $39 today. So I decided to try one. At check out it rang up $19 so I grabbed 2 figured what the heck.

Also, Im in the process of building a brooding pen inside my coop for when I move my broody this weekend. If the move is successful, how many eggs can I safely give her to sit on for the last 6-7 days til hatch. She is a large Australorp hen almost a year old. I want to give her as many as possible as Im pretty sure she will do a better job with them than I can.

It IS what they say I believe...to let the 'bator run for a day or so to make sure one has even temps. I start mine about an hour or so before I put eggs in mine...but mine heats up super quick and holds nice.

I brought the eggs home that I bought...it was a 4+ hour drive. But I mine rested 12 days before I got mine in....(not by choice)

I do see veins a good majority of the purchased ones. I "had" planned to get them in by 7 days.

Unfortunately I'm one who doesn't get it...

I never did get to watch the new ones...

for the best for your chickie!!

I agree completely, it is best to have the incubator up and running and know it will hold temp and humidity. My incubators have been running since mid-October pretty much non-stop. Since my Brinsea was not the temperature it was reading digitally, for the NYD hatch along, I have been diligent about using the spot check and calibrating each hatch.

That is just how I have had some success with shipped eggs. In the beginning, I was hatching 1 out of 12. Either the eggs are making the trip better or I am getting a better system.
