The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Just bought some! Leghorns seem to have a continual problem with dirty butts.

Is there some reason leghorns have this problem and nobody else seems too?

I bought two chicks this yr. One did fine, the other had a small problem for about a week. Doing great now. :)

Just candled, and out of 60 eggs I only tossed 6 certain clears. No blood rings that I could see. Very happy with that.

I have a very strange egg though. I have an egg with a air cell on its side- not a shipped egg, it is one of mine. I even incubate my eggs upright. It is the strangest thing. Has anyone else seen anything like this?

Man..that looks great compared to what I just dealt with ... with my bantam eggs. But, they were shipped. That doesn't look bad even for it being yours. It is a bit larger..the only one? I wouldn't worry, if they were all looking larger, then I would down the humidity. But if the others are looking good, just keep it the same.

This isn't the one with the strange air cell- the cell is literally on the side of the egg.

I want to candle but the broody won't let me lol she kinda growls at me just for collecting the other eggs. Next time I will try the incubator and the broody

Just did my day 7 candle. Of the 8 I set, 7 have good development, one is a possible clear or early quitter - but the eggs are dark blue/green, so it's hard to see. I put it back in the incubator and will check it again at 10 days before deciding whether to toss.

Can't wait to candle my eggs this evening to see what's going on in them! This last 7 days seems to have taken an age to get around :pop

:fl they are all ok with them coming through the post.

curious how small are your midget whites.   Kinda looking for a pair, kinda not.  I don't know how they would with my sweetgrass turkeys.  The midgets I have seen are quite large.

The eggs are from Union Hill Ranch in Northern California, they're our first turkeys, so all I have to go on is the info on the website. If they turn out to be what we're hoping for, we'll be holding back a tom and a hen for breeding. I'll be sure to post updates as they hatch and mature. They discontinued them at Union Hill Ranch and they are focusing on chickens, but there may still be a few available by using the "contact us" link on the website.

Candle results 3/12!!!!!

11/12 live and nice veins, #12 is a clear.... But I left it in, cuz one can never be too sure. :D
On 3+ of them... I SAW IT MOVE... No joke!!! 2 other people did too, and I wasn't holding the egg (had it on a stand thing) so I wasn't shaking it! :weee
It was moving back and forth slightly, and getting darker and lighter.. That was so amazing... One of Jace's moved, and the other has good veins.... Ohh, I lost track of how many moved, and I suspect if I had more time I woulda seen close to all of them move!! :weee
Oh oh oh oh oh this is fantastic!!!! :ya
