The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

60 definitely works for duck eggs, that what I am storing right now! Not sure about quail. It's best to store duck eggs no longer than 8 days, they may still be viable longer but the hatch percentage isn't as high, don't forget you have to let them sit at room temp. (70) before going in the incubator.

How long do you have to thaw them for before you place them in the incubator?

10 days is for optimal viability stored with big end (air cell) up, but they can be viable up to 3 weeks... @ronott1 mentioned long term storage with the pointy end up in the fridge... storing eggs is pretty much the same across the species/breeds...

So which end up? Pointy or air pocket end up? Isn't the air pocket usually on the eggs round end?

Sincerely,
Your Fellow Homesteader,

Yes, air cell is on the big, round end... store them with that up if for just a short period, like 10 days... for longer storage time period, store them pointy end up...

Got 3 breeder pens put up today for my turkeys. Gave them 10x20 pens this time. 1 tom and 4 hens in each.

Of course the hens must have known what's coming because 2 decided they needed to mate before they got locked up.

And I got my first post winter vacation chicken egg today. So maybe my girls will cooperate earlier this year.

I'm looking into incubators and am wondering which one to buy!

I would like a no fuss no muss no coconuts, plug in and play, auto turning one that can handle any egg

(mainly duck and quail), and has a good hatch rate. Any suggestions? Also what has been your experience with said model, pros and cons of it and the hatch rate you've had when that model was in use.

Well I wouldn't set quail and duck eggs together. They have different humidity requirements as well as size differences. The optimal conditions for one are not optimal for the other. Chicken eggs are closer in humidity needs but still I have found the vast size difference makes you have to split the difference and then you don't get your best hatch out of either,

Hat are the optimal requirements for heat and humidity, etc for ducks and then quail?

Thank you all!

Well, I've realized this is one of ''those threads'' that get like fifty posts a day.......lol.

I'm am going to try convincing my mom to let me get 1 dozen Blue Ameraucana eggs and 1 dozen Black Copper Maran eggs for this HAL, now that I'm starting to get the basics of incubating down, I'm not freaked out I'll ruin the eggs. Now to convince her this is a good idea....
When the chix start hatching there will be more like 200 posts a day

My chix that were SUPPOSED to hatch yesterday afternoon are just starting to pip, that's what I get for not letting them fully warm up to room temp before setting

However ALL 12 shipped eggs developed and are still alive! Never had that happen before. Although 8 of them have extreme saddle air cells and will need assistance so I'm glued to the incubator today.

Pictures will be required of all chicks hatching so that those of us not hatching this time of year can get a chick fix too!
