The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

Update, candled all the eggs today. 27 left, 5 were never fertilized and 1 was a quitter on day 2 or 3. All the rest seem to be doing well.

You get lucky. A Welsummer Male over a hatchery Barred Rock female (so black sex link), gave me this egg. Her eggs now that she is older, are less purple-y.

Day 18.

That is HILARIOUS!

I always wanted to learn to play the piano, but in 7th grade, got stuck with the clarinet because my grandfather had one. Let's just summarize and say that the dogs howled when I practiced.

When my kids are grown and gone, I WILL learn to play the piano!
That is an AWESOME purple!!! Mine is a little bit softer, but definitely purple. It's just the one chicken. I have tenants in the back house. She takes VERY good care of all these chickens, along with my mother. So, she takes the eggs one day, we get them the next. I went through 3 of our days of eggs, and no purple - my mom said she hasn't seen one in a few weeks. So, I will have to see who is brooding or molting and I might find my purple egg layer!!! Either that or she only lays ever other day - on the days we aren't getting them.

Upon candling last night, I realized I have had a big hairline crack and the chick inside is kicking! I can't remember if I already said that...I am old. Lol

That egg is beautiful!

my BSL isn't consistent on her color but it's always brown. Some days a darker brown and other days like today a light brown. Which is why it took me forever to figure out who lays what. I've actually seen her lay these eggs so no mistaking for someone else doing it.

Well I candled for the first time. ALL of my own eggs were infertile - I was sort of expecting it. But, the shipped eggs are awesome! 1 clear, 1 early death, the rest look great. Unfortunately, there is one egg that is almost completely oval. The slightest narrowing on one end caused me to place that end down. I candled and the air cell is on the wrong end - at least I think so. It's the ONLY air cell that is saddled. I put it back in with the air cell up. We'll see how it does.

I finally had the opportunity to candle my eggs. None of the free range eggs are fertile, so I'm down to 7 buff orpington eggs. Not a big disappointment. I knew my free range rooster was getting too old to be fertile.

EHAL - Day 14 Candling Report:

Crele Orpinton - 20 set, 2 clears = 18 - 1 quitter = 17 remaining, but 3 are questionable
Jubilee Orpington- 9 set, 1 clear = 8 - 1 quitter = 7 remaining
Cream Legbar - 9 set, no clears = 9 - 3 quitters = 6 remaining
Langshan - 5 set, no clears = 5 - 2 quitters = 3 remaining
Bredha - 5 set, no clears = 5 - no quitters = 5 remaining
Out of 48 set, 38 are still in the running although 3 of those remaining are questionable. Okay with the results of the second candling, but finding 7 quitters was somewhat disappointing.
