The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

Okay
I think I'll be setting a few eggs on Friday. I saw a couple of fertile Silver Laced Orpington eggs in my bowl so I think it's time to try hatching a few of them. If I set them on Friday at midnight, they should hatch on March 17th if they are fertile. Does that sound right?
I'll be more than happy to trade you some sparkly bunny eggs for for some silver-laced orpington eggs!

Actually, my wife has been asking me to get her some SLO hatching eggs this year, so I may add those to my H-A-L hatch as well.

Quote: Thank you. I plan to spend the first half of tomorrow cleaning them, because I have a birthday party to go to tomorrow. As long as it doesn't rain I'll have plenty of time to let them air out.

In other news, I done done it. I've already ordered eggs for the week of the set date. I forgot what I ordered as soon as I placed... kind of a no duh because it's an assortment and I have zero clue what I'll be getting.
Hi Razadia!

I'd x3 on the advice above. I think bleach is the go-to for cleaning after mice. Just make sure to wet everything so no dust is stirred up. The first thing the guys here want to do is sweep or vacuum.

And even so, the dust has to be continually re-infected by mice to make it dangerous. Here's a link that explains a bit more. It's not the link I was looking for, but it may be more appropriate because it's from the US.

I looked on my Virkon efficacy chart and I while I don't see Hantavirus listed, I also hit anything that has been "moused" with Virkon as a final step because it doesn't have a scent. It's also what I use every so often on my incubator because it does kill so many types of viruses, bacteria and fungi and it has no scent to give me a headache afterwards. The Hibitane I use is getting old. I tend to overdo things.

Virkon is crazy expensive though.

It does have wonderful detergents properties for cleaning so you can skip the soap.

Oh yes, gloves! Latex, vinyl...I'd probably go with Nitrile gloves if you have them. And a long handled veg brush. That way your hands are protected and it doesn't seem so gross.

Disposable gloves are my go-to when handling the ickies.

I couldn't handle half the nasty stuff I do without them. We get the odd mouse too every so often.

No worries about dust since I took them directly outside and basically pressure washed the dead mice out of them. Thank you for your take on it. I'll look into the stuff you mentioned and see if I can afford it! I'm going to have to buy bleach as it is. Apparently I don't have any.

You too? I just went out and bought bleach myself because apparently, I was out as well.

Virkon is a disinfectant, virucide, fungicide and a cleaner. I have it in a 50g packet of loose powder and a bottle of 50 effervescent tablets

50g packet - $5.75ish - 10 grams makes 1 liter of 1% solution (kills Newcastle Virus, Avian Influenza Virus)
50 pill bottle - $30 1 tablet makes 500 ml of 1% solution.
In Canada at one of our feed stores just to give you an idea so you don't waste your time if it's not something you want.

Just so you know, once mixed the Virkon solution is only stable for 7 days at room temperature. It can also burn the skin if it's in a concentrated state. One of my co-workers sat on a pail of it at work and it burned the skin on her legs. You just have to be careful. I'm quite fond of the tablets but I just about had a heart attack when I saw it in the feed store the other day. And I got my stuff from the vet. Yikes! I've moved to this because I use my HIbitane for procedures involving wounds and for birthings in our livestock because it's non irritating to tissue. I also have new Hibitane cream for wounds...it's the bomb. But $30 a tube I think.

Yep. I don't use it as much as I used to, so I guess I just didn't notice when I ran out. I mist the insides of the tops of my styrobators with it, but I haven't hatched since last year's hal. I looked and virkon is about $22 on Amazon for 50 tablets and that's the smallest amount they sell. So not too bad. I may have to get it before the set date for a second cleaning if it's that good of a disinfectant.

Oh golly, I suppose I will probably be in on this one too.... hmm, maybe it's time to give my daughter's perpetual request a try. Silkies. Hmm. The jury is still out.

Awesome! Look at it this way...you'll hardly have to start your incubator if you have Silkies...lol. I have Silkie crosses...and 3 of them are broody right now.

Quote: That's a pretty good price! I'll have to look into that.

The vet suggested Virkon for my brooder. When the hog barn I worked at, started in '95, Virkon was one of the disinfectants used...and it's still on the market. The rooms were disinfected with Virkon and when dry...they were bleached.

I've only been using it since September...but so far I really like it. It'll be a staple in my supplies.
