The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

I always have problems rehoming boys. I take them to the auction as a last resort. I don't like how they are handled there. I had 2 boys from last year till a few days ago. It depends on an area on how well one can rehome. Around here not alot of people care about breed. All barred chickens are "dominickers" to these people. And alot don't take care of them like I do so it's hard to send them to what will be most likely a horrible death.

Yeah, it must depend on area

And ohhh okay, that stinks. I guess having no one care about breeds would make it harder to rehome.

Although, that's chickens right? Or are your ducks harder to rehome too?

I feel like chickens are always harder to rehome cause they don't have as many uses and can be mean whereas lots of people have ducks as pets now

And sorry, my original post might have sounded a little rude but i didn't mean to

It can be very difficult to find homes for boy birds. If she don't have room for them it would be better to dispatch than make them live over crowded. Another option is to take them to an auction barn or an ad on Craigslist or another sale site. Free ads move pretty fast. Or find somebody with a pond that will take them.

Welshchick lives in Wales/UK, so to be honest, I really don't know her situation across the pond. However, I try to give the cockerels I hatch a chance. (I don't raise ducks, not yet anyway.

) Personally, I've never had a problem rehoming a cockerel. I have six right now that I will probably trade or sell: Three English Chocolate Orpington, and three French Black Copper Marans. They're seven weeks out, so I will hang on to them for awhile, at least another month, but they are earmarked to go. I will most likely try to trade for a quality roo or cockerel from different bloodlines.

As for what people do after they acquire one of my birds, I don't lose any sleep over it. They can cuddle it, breed it, or roast it on a spit. That's their prerogative.

Offer them up for free! I do this on our large ad/news site when I have too many..and they would be straight run at a time like this.spring time..so many in feed stores right now..folks aren't buying unless they see a particular breed they want. I will probably have to do this with these mixes I just hatched.

And as their own hatched chicks, it's their prerogative on whether they grow out cockerels or cull at hatch...

I'm a bit disturbed by the confrontational remarks towards our BYC member... please, everyone, can we remember that there is no one true way? We all have our preferences and issues, there's no need to make someone uncomfortable or to feel unwelcome in asking a simple question... this has become uncomfortably close to sounding like judgement to me, thus my reason for speaking up...

And I believe they were talking about the chicken breed, Pekin, not the breed of duck...
Wether you cull or not it's your birds and it's your decision I usually cull at a later date whith my Roos they get raised to freezer size then are culled but I do have the room to do that some don't so you get stuck between a rock and a hard place. They said last resort that they would have to cull which is fine I would rather cull than throw out and let starve because I could not afford to care for them they get sick and cause my flock to die out? NOO! To starve? NOO! Sometimes life is harsh but it's how farmers have been doing since the first farmer and will go on long after we are gone.

Final hatch...8 of 10 that went into lock down. Man, those babies have been hatching left and right since 2 in the morning. The last one just hatched.
Here is a reminder of what the package looked like. The guy that sent them..packed them well! 30 eggs! The P.O. sent them the wrong way to start with! Up north, instead of down South to me. ?? Anyway... It looks like there are only around 4 to 6 broken..broken big time yes, a lot of cracked ones, and the yolk went everywhere...all along the bottom of the eggs in the cartons. I had to wash them all. 11 started. I got 8.

He had them in an ice chest. I see the yolk and think..oh oh!
And the smell!

Some of those big bubble wraps had busted!

You can see that the wrapped them in the thick mail envelopes,
and inside, the eggs were wrapped too.

They are so strong and cute. These folks had some fertile eggs! I would have had sooo many! Pictures tomorrow. Or later, this last little one is already awake awake!

When all of your eggs are set for the Hatch-a-long, please post your total number of eggs set here in this thread.
This includes all types of fowl.

Please total your eggs, so BantyChooks doesn't have to count them all. There is plenty
of work involved just recording the numbers for this many people hatching at once.

If you do not set any eggs, please post that too, so we know not to contact you for your number of eggs set.

Pictures are great, as we all love seeing egg pictures..........but they are not mandatory.
Thank you!

Please add me to the list. I was going to put them in on the 24th but what is another day... I only have chickens to hatch..
