The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

Ya 49 hatch out of 104 with only 48 surviving after hatch not too bad for an old charity case incubator and it being our first hatch ever! I had only hoped for maybe 1 baby so this many does the heart good!

My service dog Bella loves being their surrogate Mommy! She will guard them all day long, when she's not checking in on me of course and she let's me know when they need something too! Bonus!!!

I didn't get the covers. I didn't have the funds. Plus I though they like to go up there and dive off or now some of them even sleep up there! I don't have the press and seal stuff yet either unfortunately. Do the covers make the bottom produce more heat or just keep the top clean?

I love that your service dog guards them! I have 2 cats that want to kill them, so the pup only gets to see them as they come out of the 'bator (he gets to inspect and lick each one). Then, once they end up outside, his run is is right next to the babies, all the way out to the adults. He stops and visits them all.

First time I did anything, I just used Saran wrap and I poked holes for the legs and wiggled the wrap down to the plate, stretched it over to the other 2 legs, did the same, then cut off the extra. They have sharp claws, so it rips pretty easily. But, yes, once the poo dries it can be washed off pretty easily. I'm just lazy and covering it makes it easier for me later on.....

But I haven't notice it adding any extra heat.

I love your enclosure! It's a nice big bucket. I ended up getting a feed trough - it was the only thing big enough to fit the large heat plate. I like how sturdy it is.

Good luck with the rest of your eggs!!

Wrap a bunch of layers of plastic wrap around the plate. It should not get hot enough to melt it. When it gets dirty, take off one layer. Usually that is each day or so.

Where is the egg total page. I tink I reported my eggs but not sure.
Here is the peahen that moved in. It is my neighbors but he isn't worried about her. She roosts here

she follows me like a dog must have been a pet.....

Post your numbers here and look on the first page for the list to see if your numbers have been recorded

ok, thanks and how long do I give them to pip internally?
Usually they pip internally into the air cell fine but will sometimes hit a vein when they externally pip. That happens if the chick moves over to a spot where the saddle in the air cell goes up. If they do pip there and hit a vein, they can asphyxiate on the blood or bleed out.

What you look for is liquid coming out of the external pip and it being in the wrong place. If so, you have to try clearing the liquid. It is a dicey operation but can work
