I was just going to post my little cold chicken story, then I saw this. So, here it is:
I am in SE Minnesota, and for those of you not watching the weather here, we are hoping to get back up to some positive temps here. We did manage to get a high of 10 yesterday, but the wind is blowing now and they are saying wind chills of -30. Now for you southern folks, it is cold. We live here, but you don't ever quite "get used to" -30. Our highs through the holidays were around -10. Yes, I said HIGHS! My chickens are in a small coop (4'X6'), 7 of them. When the temps were still in the positives around 10-20˚, they didn't want to come out to play, even though we left their little chickie door open for if they wanted to. I have a heat lamp inside just for them to feel some warmth. Mind you, these are 5 Dark Cornish standards (1-yr), an Australorp pullet and EE roo that are 18-weeks. They are doing great with no frostbite problems. But the other day when we had one of those -10 days, guess who came out to play in the snow? You got it, all of them were out aroun 3-4:00. Crazy Chickens! Our kids won't even go out and play when it is that cold. But there they were, scratching and walking around. They must have had cabin fever. Funnier still, guess who has started laying again? My Cornish did not lay for beans all summer and fall, but now I am getting eggs almost daily. So, is 20˚ too cold? I think not.
