Missing!
The stretch of lovely Michigan weather continued for a few days. The chickens free ranged and searched all of the yard for tasty treats. The Food People had the little Food Grandson visiting, so they were in and out of the house all day. Of course, everyone ran over to the Food Palace every time one of the Food People went near it. The Food Grandson loved to throw out scratch for everyone, mostly in the driveway which increased the number of "Chicken Presents" to avoid stepping in.
The people were in the house baking cookies when the Down the Road Neighbor came to the door. âDo you know your chickens are across the road in the field? They are in the ditch, too!" The Food Lady and Grandson flew out the door to save the girls. Yes, there they wereâpicking over the freshly turned field. Such Wicked Girls!
As the Food Lady got closer, she realized that the rooster in the field looked different. Sort of like Leroy but he had a big tall tail instead of a manly round butt. And the girls with him had identical twins standing at her feet. Those were the Across the Road Neighborâs chickens free ranging for the first time!
The roosters were crowing and crowing. Even Walter made his cat-strangling crow. Pretty soon the neighbor's chickens wandered off and the boys were happy that they had kept all their girls safe. Life resumed. Scratching, bathing, moments of romance (well, seconds of romance . . .), preening, then time for bed.
(The Food Grandson let the banties out to play.)
