The adventures of Barbara (BR)

I had a sweet little oegb x silkie that was injured by an overzealous cockeral. I thought she was dead when I found her on the ground at bedtime. Brought her in and after MONTHS of rehab, she began to improve until she was able to walk again. Won't go into all the details but it was a very moving experience so, yes, I agree, don't give up until he lets you know. They DO let you know when they want to stop fighting, you know. I pray the little rock boy makes it!

Best wishes for your ailing boy there Mrs. Chickendad. You might try tuna or eggs, scrambled or boiled, either or. It seems when I have a critter problem here they always go for my left out eggs or a broodies nest that she "thinks" is hidden well enough from outsiders.

Thanks for the shirt and mug I will wear the shirt proudly, and also think of Barbara while having my morning coffee, lol.

Okay, our Barbara fixes are getting fewer and farther between! We need a Barbara story!

in the absence of Barbara and family- here is my new girl, already corrupting her best friend.... silkies don't perch, right? These were raised together and are best friends

The Babysitter

Frizzie has decided that she has had enough of motherhood. Her five babies (four frizzles and a smooth white) are nearly as big as she is, so she is fostering their independence. Handsome Rusty has had his eye on Frizzie and has enticed her with treats and other . . . ahem . . . acts of love, so she has allowed the babies to run the streets. She has taught them how to landscape flower beds, picking out the tastiest and most expensive plants to eat, and they have learned to bathe in the pine tree spa just outside the back door until they are so dirty they are unrecognizable. So apparently Frizzie thinks they are ready for the world. And she is ready for them to go. Rusty is looking mighty fine, and even Leroy is appealing. So she has abandoned her children and run off with her men chicken.

Frizzie no longer sleeps with her babies. She tried taking up with the Rhode Island Reds; after all they are nearly the same color, but the constant peeping (the RIR are still babies) got on her nerves. The next night she holed up with Leroy and Rusty, but romance all day and all night wasn’t leaving much time to rest up from motherhood. Mrs. Chickendad decided to leave Frizzie loose in the garage where she could visit the babies if she chose (she didn’t) and choose a roosting spot to suit herself.

Today Mrs. Chickendad was working in the flower beds when she noticed Frizzie had a babysitter for her kids. The five little cochins were tagging along behind Rusty. He was finding treats for them and calling them to come and see. He kept them together and they all scratched around in the back flower bed. When he found something tasty, he would “bucka-bucka” to them and hold out the treat for them to take from his beak. He is a good daddy.

Leroy took over for Rusty when he went off for a date with Frizzie. He did the same as Rusty, watching the kids and finding treats for them. Then Frizzie would go off with Leroy while Rusty babysat.

Frizzabella is about to do the same. Her frizzie white baby is almost as old as the others, but he still needs his mama and the other kids tend to not let him play. She holes up with him at night in the broody pen, but pretty much lets him run with the other delinquent chicks during the day. She did discover where the Frizzie Family was staying, though and proceeded to go in their coop to lay her egg. Frizzie lays in the same spot, way at the back of the pen, so Mrs. Chickendad has to fish the eggs out with a badminton racquet. There were six eggs in the pen before she realized what the girls were up to.

Life goes on . . .

Did anyone see that Frizzie and her babies were last Tuesday's Workday Chicken Picture?

Cute photo, Robin. Love your odd couple. Now we will have tightrope walking silkies!

Patient update: the little rock boy is doing much better. He is eating a bit and moving around his pen. He holds his head at an odd angle, and his comb and wattles are pale, so he's not up to snuff just yet. But MUCH improved. We'll probably do another round of antibiotics, that seemed to have helped more than anything.

Critter update: Mrs. Chickendad came face-to-face with a critter last night. Whether or not it was THE critter is yet to be determined. Looked like a large housecat, but it had oversize pointy ears, and appeared to have a long tail. I'm thinking feral cat. It was sitting outside the wyandotte pen trying to figure how to get in (they were locked in the coop). Of course, the .22 was in the bedroom closet, so of no use at all. The Neighbor Who Brings Melon Rinds has borrowed the trap to try and catch the raccoons that are eating his corn, so once that is accomplished, we will get it back and try again.
