The African and Chinese goose thread!!

I have a pair of white Chinese geese that are between 5 and 6 months old.  I was shocked to discover that my goose is laying eggs; she has a nest with 4 eggs in it currently.  I thought they only laid in the spring.  Is this unusual for geese?  I assume they are not fertile.  She won't try to hatch them out at that age will she?

I have a Chinese gander with 3 Chinese hens and 4 African hens. I got them as hatchlings this Spring and they have been mating for months. They started laying about a month ago. One of my African hens keeps stealing duck eggs, rolling them into her nest and trying to go broody. So it is possible.

I got 2 geese May 17 of this yr. They were aprox 5 days old. 1 Chinese & 1 African. Both supposed to be female but my Chinese is a gander. My African started laying eggs a couple days ago. I collected the eggs and we are going to eat them but if i let some hatch will the goslings be fertile or not?I Im new to geese so just thought id ask people who have more experience :)

Pure Africans should not lay till following spring since they have a lot of growing to do etc. sometimes lay till they are 2 years old. But chinese can lay in first year.

So here are a couple pics of them - got them in may ( 17th ) & they were apox 5 days old. Started laying a couple days ago. I was surprised to see her in a nest & laying eggs because of her age.

They are both chinese ;) not near African.
The brown has a breed defect (white feather strip on the belly) so that means it is a Brown chinese crossed with a white chinese but it is still a pure chinese

Well thats good info to have right there :) Thats what happens when you purchase goslings & just take their word & compare to pics online lol...

Yes very true. I was disappointed but we are already bonded so they are keepers :)

They sure are keepers! If they were mine, I would let her brood & hatch them. White X brown will hatch brown/brown bibbed. I prefer brown chinese geese and crosses with embden anyways. Its very hard to find a true african goose breeder. I just love my geese, period they are all keepers here.

I was only upset in the beginning because i wanted large geese - we are all very bonded to these two & trust me they are not going anywhere :) Love them. I am going to let her hatch some in the future - I was just shocked she started laying so young. The gander is such a king - he protects everything out there - so proud. Both pretty sweet birds
