The African and Chinese goose thread!!

1/2 acer pond is pretty big. When we had a small pond 100 ft x 110 ft (roughly) so this might not work for you. we use rope and Ribben. The ribbon is tied every 12 inches or so along the rope then we would walk on either side of the pond trying to keep the rope about 6 - 12 inches above the water. Our geese would move away from the rope and end up on shore. It can be done by attaching the rope to a pole as well if there is only one person. Probably won't work on a 1/2 acre that would be a lot of rope.

Cedarhedge, that's actually a really good idea. I'm not sure it would work with their pond but it's worth a shot. It is more narrow going one way and may be closer to a 1/4 acre.

I'll pass it along, it could be a possibility. Here's them on the pond so you can see size.

That is beautiful.. Actually only thing that can keep water fowl safe is being locked in a secure building which your grandfather wants to do. Having a beautiful pond really makes it hard to convince them that they are on a preds dinner menu.Preds will swim too. Try these ideas then if they don't work maybe fence in an area around the entrance to the barn so when they come up to eat your granddad can close the fence up and they will be ready to go into their stall. Geese love whole corn so that maybe one way to get them up to the barn and only feed them inside so they know that is where food is. Corn is a special treat for coming home.

Thank you Miss Lydia! Exactly, he just wants to keep them safe. I never had any issues getting them into the duck/geese house, here and I had them for the first 5 months of their lives. But I didn't have a gorgeous pond! Lol

I did suggest the fence idea to him, we just wanted to make sure they get free range time too. I didn't think about using it as a way to trap them rather than actually penning them.

Appreciate the advice!

I use this when getting any new water fowl if they haven't been raised here and don't know the routine. It works well. Hope it will there too. Bless your granddad for wanting them and wanting to keep them safe. Keep us updated.
