The African and Chinese goose thread!!

I've been sick for almost a week... pretty much on lock down in the house since this past Friday except for the basics of going out and feeding/watering/ moving the mobile pen, and letting the trio out and putting them back in when needed.
I went to the doctor on Monday and was diagnosed with a mild case of pneumonia with a dose of pleurisy just to make it fun. Sent home with a truck load of medications, and told to REST.

Today, the weather cooled off a bit so I had the front door opened for some nice fresh air, and they decided to come around to the front porch looking for me.

Hey lady, where you been...

Really, we just stopped by to chat...

Huh... what tipped over plant pot? What? Noooo... didn't see that.

Well, I think me and the ladies will just head on back to mowing the lawn and chilling in the pool if you are going to ask rude questions like that then.

Those sillies came back twice more.
I had a baby gate up across the doorway and my boy was nibbling at it and sqonking and chatting at me across it. If it hadn't been there he would have come right in.
I chatted back with him from the sofa. And the once I took my phone over and shot these pics while also up for a drink.
I have decided that the kids are obviously missing me, and tomorrow I'll be taking one of the lounge chairs out onto the lawn under the oak tree, near their pool, to spend some time with them.

Hope you feel much better already.. and those kids really do miss you such pretty geese.

Day before yesterday the kids were naughty and decided to de-pot a good size, sunny pink, purslane that I've had going for at least two years.

Fortunately, the stuff is basically made of iron and will regrow from as many cutting as they want to shred it into... and in all honesty was looking a good bit leggy and needed rejuvenating anyway, so I suppose they did me a 'favor'. Just not good timing. After being sick, and not quite fully recovered, I was trying to get the house ready to pick up a friend from out of town at the airport yesterday.

Purslane is still laying in a heap on the ground where they left it. So re-potting is the job of the day, along with filling in the lawn holes from their mobile pen during the week while I was too sick to do much of anything other than put them in/out/ feed/water/ and move it.

I walked them to the back pasture today. The friend from out of town is a male friend of my husbands... a real city boy and a bit of a pill, but my husband has been pals with him forever so I'm tolerant. No goose confrontations on his first day at the farm. I'll give a couple of days to settle in, and maybe I won't teach him the 'bluff' exactly right away.

At least Purslane is edible maybe you'll have lots of baby Purslane growing all over now.

Do male geese try to sit on eggs? My gander saw me getting some chicken eggs, and because they were on the ground, he came over and started moving them with his beak. He tried to pick them up in his beak. He stepped on them, and cracked two. :/. But he looked like he was trying to sit on them, but just didn't know how. He did not want me touching them. The eggs are in the nesting boxes, and he can't get to them. This was the first time he has payed attention to the eggs. He is the only goose. Does he need/want to sit on eggs? What should I do?

Some ganders want babies so much they will collect eggs, and help the hens set on them and protect them.. I have had a gander eat eggs too. usually chicken eggs. (my Embden fella) Its possible.
There isn't really anything you need to do. If you want more birds let them hatch them, if not take away the eggs. Geese are very dedicated to hatching babies, but may not take care of chicken chicks.

He needs a mate. I think he is trying to tell you he is desperate and will even sit on eggs to get a goose friend. lol
