The African and Chinese goose thread!!

I don't have geese now - just this one that we rescued last week. Her mate was killed on a busy road and a neighbor had posted about her needing a home on Craigslist. I happened to see the ad and we went and picked her up. We have named her "Highway" and she seems to be settling in alright with our chickens and guinea hens, horses and guardian dogs. She was laying eggs and has laid another huge egg here since she arrived a few days ago. I threw the eggs in the incubator but her mate was killed a few weeks ago so I doubt they are fertile eggs. I am currently incubating some other goose eggs, so maybe she will take to them once they hatch and can go outside. I'm assuming she is a Toulouse goose. ...? I have no history on her other than the neighbors who listed her said they just "showed up" in their area and hung around for a few months before the male was killed. No idea on her age either. Is there any way to tell their age?

That's awesome you are taking care of her, she is beautiful! I think your right that she is a toulouse. I don't know how you would tell the age.

Hi All!!
I started reading through your threads and noticed 293 so hopped over to ask a question or two. Do the geese mix with poultry? I want some geese really bad enough, I've had to make myself leave the feedstore. My daughter bought a couple while visiting here and they are awesome!!! Also, do they really eat weeds or mostly the grass?

Thank you!!

Welcome! My geese live with my ducks and chickens, but I don't let the gander be with the ducks unless I'm around, he can be mean to them. My geese enjoy lots of weeds, but they do love grass too!

I used to have over a hundred geese roaming with chickens, ducks and Guineafowl and never had a problem maybe when the rooster challenged the ganders but that was it ;)

I love to see them too, every time I hear them fly over I rush out to see them! I wish I could get some to land in the yard, but my gander always scares any away that are coming in for a landing. :(

Oh that would be scary! When Elizabeth flies somewhere new I usually panic, run out to find her, then when I go back home to see if she is there, she always is!

Oh, I see. How does that decrease their strength?

How much do Greylags weigh? I've heard of Canada ganders reaching 14-15 pounds.

That's amazing they all hatched! Hopefully they found a flock and were able to make it in the wild! Do you have any pictures of the Canadas or your domestic geese?

If the wings are clipped the wings won't have as much force and the wings would be a lot less stronger if that makes sense :p

I don't actually know how much greylags weight actually :L

So they lose their strength gradually? I would think the air resistance from the wings would slow the wings down... ?
