The African and Chinese goose thread!!

I have one goose egg that is supposed to be hatching anytime. It has internally pipped and I can see it moving around. Occasionally, the whole egg moves quite a bit - I guess from the baby moving around inside. I've read the egg hatching guide that was posted on BYC for goose eggs until I've about memorized it. I am so nervous and hope it hatches alright. Today was day 28.... I will get up during the night to check on it.

This is one of 2 eggs that turned out to be viable from the 7 I got through the mail service.

If it does hatch, how long do you leave the baby in the incubator before moving it to a brooder/rubbermaid tub???

Excited for you! I leave my new gosling in the hatching tray until dry and fluffy. Usually a day.

If you feel any concern follow your gut, hand feed her chick feed, or make sure feed and water is close. Chinese are very dedicated broodies. Make sure she has a water bucket to dunk and preen also.

Why chick feed? Also would cracked corn help fatten her up? Thank you!

Hi everyone! I'm currently trying to figure out the gender of my emden/chinese mix goose.


This is it. It doesn't honk much and when it does, it has a low pitch honk. It hasn't tried mating nor has anything tried mating it.
It's over a year old and I'm unsure if it's started laying eggs yet because when my female starts laying eggs, I don't take any in, I just leave them for her to go broody.
I should've counted them or separated this goose during laying season, but sadly I didn't, now I'm stuck trying to figure out what it is.
I tried vent sexing it, but I've never vent sexed a goose before so I'm unsure If I did it perfect.
I have photos of that, but I dont know if I'm allowed to post them here, so if there is anyone that knows how to vent sex a goose, would you mind if I sent you the photos?

When she is broody she isn't out foraging, getting the good grasses and clover. Chick feed is loaded with vitamins, minerals and protein. I do this with any of my brooding poultry and waterfowl. Corn will help as a treat, but she needs to maintain body mass, not fat.

I keep hearing from some people that it's a gander and others it's a hen so I'm very very unsure lol

Guess who was in the incubator when I got home!!!!!! SOOOO excited!!!!!

I will take it out of the incubator tomorrow morning. It still seemed wet tonight. Thank you all so much for your help. I have one more goose egg that will possibly hatch Tuesday. I still see movement in it so keeping fingers crossed. These are eggs that were shipped from Louisiana to NC via USPS, then our power went out for 8 hours from a tree falling on the lines, then went out again due to a storm for a few hours. It is just a miracle this one made it. I started with 7, 2 were broken when they arrived, 3 didn't make it for whatever reason, this one hatched day 29 and the other should hatch Tuesday (day 28) for it.

Should I put this little one in with my baby chicks? Will pine shavings be okay for bedding or wire? I am using towels on the bottom of the incubator. I'm afraid paper towels would be too slick. Does anyone use shelf liner - the rubbery kind of stuff?

The other babies are just too big and would probably trample this little one, so I will keep it separate for a good while. I cannot get over how quickly they grow. Its almost as if they double in size by the day!
