The African and Chinese goose thread!!

Pics
Watching and praying for one of our hatchlings. We cam home from work to find him/her on their back, unable to stand.
Suspecting it was the heat/dehydration (although there was plenty of water and they had their pool) No sign of any trauma, and the other 7 are fine. Fred (his/her fellow hatchling is George) has managed to drink, and is breathing easier but still cannot stand.

I have an African gander I got as a young adult (probably a yearling) in 2000. He had an Emden "girlfriend" but she passed away a few years ago, and I am thinking about finding an African goose for a new mate. Since the Emden passed on, my gander has been socializing with the ducks. He doesn't seem to have any problems with that (and he gets along fine with the ducks for the most part), but it would be nice to have goslings.

Hi!
welcome-byc.gif
& to this thread!! Do you think it might be from a Niacin deficiency? If you're new to geese, check out the Advanced Search at the top and look for Niacin and/or Brewers Yeast (but make sure to select the Goose forum, otherwise you'll get results from the entire site. whoa.) I know it affects leg strength in goslings.

I'm sure your African gander would love the company of an african goose! What's your gander's name? Do you have any pics of him to share

I have a question for those of you with adult Chinese geese, regarding their knobs. My 4 month old gander, Nine, is starting to develop a small bump. But it feels a lot softer than his beak, almost fleshy. I was expecting it to be hard, since to me, it just looks the knobs are just bumps at the base of their bills. Will the knob eventually become hard like the rest of the beak, or will it stay soft even as an adult? (i'll snap some pictures of him / them later on today & see if I can post them today)

I might try posting this question on the main goose thread to see what others have to say, in case they're not subscribed to this thread

Here is another knob question:

Charlotte is developing a bump on her beak....It is just now beginning to rise. She is preening after bathing ...

Also...when should her legs start turning more orangey pink?

Ninya's are already orange

And a question about sexing:
I was reading that the goose has a deeper honk than the gander. His is high-pitched compared to hers.
Ninya has a shrill honk and Charlotte has a much deeper voice...should I be looking at different names.....Ninya doesn't have a knob developing on her beak yet.

A short video of "Fred". For a while we thought we were going to lose him. We came home to find him on his back, unable to right himself. We have decides that somehow he injure his leg.
After a couple of weeks he has improved, but it looks like he may never be as agile as the others.

Glad to hear of Freds improvement, are you giving him vitamins? also extra niacin and or Brewers yeast may help.

goose butt! hehe love it!

this one cracks me up. you all know this position and sound! haha

grass trimmers!

They are getting feathers- oh la la! Chuck is bigger than Sarah- taller and fatter. He did have 2 angel wing like wings going on but the one totally corrected itself and the other is still hanging- but I really suspect it's heavy. The wing has a ton of those 'tubes' on it filled with the feathers. I think maybe give it another week maybe and see if I should wrap it?

It's insanely difficult for me to get any pics of them with their dang heads up. Always low to the ground chowing! lol

We had photo day this week..even in the heat. Mornings are still cool enough for a little activity but afternoons are in the 100s. Today it is already 114 degrees.

Bath time. Charlotte waits her turn.

We are both getting knobs

Ninya Lookin' good!

We nibble everything

Mom, I smell coffee, but I like that button

Rain dance...Charlotte and Ninya. See Ninya's left wing is missing it's tip.
